🎨 The mark-making stage of our Modern Landscape oil painting course!

This is where the paintings really start to feel inspired by David Hockney — exploring complementary colours, expressive mark-making and bold, graphic edges throughout the landscapes.

Fantastic work from my Farndon evening students last week! 🎨👏

We focused on the anatomy of the deer, exploring hard and soft edges and capturing that strong, sunlit focus across the figure. There’s been an excellent range of texture and brushwork developing across all the paintings.

Looking forward to our final week, where we’ll adjust colour temperatures, increase contrast and begin to lose those legs behind the long grasses to really settle the deer into the landscape.

Our Introduction to Oil Painting workshop is designed specifically for beginners — taking you through the process step by step and helping you understand how to use oils with confidence. During this relaxed 4-hour session, we’ll explore colour mixing, brushwork, values, layering and how to avoid those muddy, over-blended colours!

A huge well done to Sue on completing this fantastic painting! 🎨👏

Love the strong sense of perspective leading you through the composition, with those warm sunlit steps contrasting beautifully against the cooler shadows. Great control of light and value, particularly across the architectural details, with the looser background helping to create a real sense of depth.

Fantastic session this week at our Farndon Morning Oil Painting class! 🎨🖌️

A huge range of paintings progressing, from landscapes and architecture to still life and animals! It’s brilliant to see such a variety of techniques and skills developing across the group.

A huge thank you to everyone for bearing with me during the unexpected power cut too! 😅 Luckily, the studio has plenty of windows and natural light, so we could keep painting!

For those who might not know, our Farndon Morning class is completely pay-as-you-go. You can book week to week and work on your own choice of painting, with support on colour mixing, technique and 1-to-1 guidance throughout the session.

Perfect if you want to develop your painting without committing to a structured course. 🎨

🌸 Our 2026 6×6 Project!🎨

37 individual flower paintings, created by students from Cheshire Art Classes, coming together to create one collaborative artwork.

The finished piece will be framed and donated to the , where we hope it brings some colour, positivity and joy to the space. 🌷

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed — I love seeing all the different styles and approaches come together!

And somehow… we ended up with exactly the same number of paintings as last year! 😂👏

🌿 Missed out this year? We’ll be launching a brand-new *6×6 Project for 2027*, with another opportunity for our students to get involved and contribute a painting!

Fantastic Birds in Watercolour session at The Lost Barn today! 🎨🐦

We even had some beautiful sunshine in the tipis this morning! ☀️

It was lovely to welcome a new group of students, with such a friendly atmosphere throughout the class. I was super impressed with everyone’s paintings and what you managed to achieve in just four hours — fantastic work all round!
