In Japan, Sashiko thread was once used to reinforce and mend clothes worn for work and daily life — simple, honest garments with a quiet beauty. That spirit runs through everything I make. Each smock I sew carries a little of that philosophy: durability, imperfection, simplicity.

In Japan, Sho means life, birth, growth.

For me, it’s about new beginnings, the way we can keep starting over, quietly but powerfully.

This piece is my way of stitching that energy of growth.

It’s a steep learning curve (read: driving me slightly demented!) but I’m working with a brilliant freelance pattern cutter who’s helping me make it happen.

I love the thought that we don’t always need to know the destination. In Japan, Gyo is about the way, not the end.
This design (called Gyo 1) is my nod to the courage of keeping on walking.

Many years ago, long before breathwork was something everyone had heard of, I went to a retreat in Ireland. It was residential, and the chef there cooked the most incredible homemade food.

At lunch and dinner, we’d all sit around eating, and people kept saying they could feel the love in the meals he made. It wasn’t just the flavours or the freshness—it was the care and attention he poured into every dish.

Last night, as I was hand-stitching one of my pieces, I found myself wondering… could you feel the same in a garment?
When you put on something handmade, can you sense the time, care, and love that went into creating it?

This smock has the catchy name of 'Mu 1' 😂

In Zen, Mu is often translated as “nothing” or “no,” but it’s really about the kind of space that lets you breathe.

I love that feeling, the pause before things begin, like that half awake, half sleep feeling in the morning, right before the moment that life crowds in.

That’s what inspired this piece: the gift of a little space, stitched into denim.
