My vinyasa yoga classes return on Saturday 5 and Monday 7 September.

Vinyasa yoga is a sequence of poses flowing together and it can be challenging and sweaty!

My classes can range from peak pose sequences, for example, Dancers pose and Revolved Dancers pose, sequences based around particular poses, such as, Warrior II and Low Lunge/Crescent Lunge, as well as more general sequences with mindful themes such as 'self-compassion/self-care' and 'feel'.

A first/trial class is free just in case you dont like it!

I finished off the second part of this year's yoga classes with a 'step back' theme.

This involved stepping forward into poses on the first run, and then stepping back into them from balancing poses on the second and subsequent runs.

The idea behind stepping back was to consider and explore a couple of ideas. That stepping back from circumstances or situations, or just life a bit, can actually be quite difficult as a choice; certainly for me moving forward and ploughing on through are behaviours that I do instinctively and I want to challenge as they dont serve me.

Also, that stepping back can be challenging on the level of moving into the unknown or a blind spot - a change from the norm of moving forward - and it can play differently with the balance of a pose, in a way stepping forward doesnt have. And how, potentially, can we prepare ourselves for this blindspot and imbalance? On the mat or off it.

And can we also observe our reactions and/or mindset of stepping back and into what may be less secure footing.

I often choose themes that are current or useful in my life when not teaching a peak pose. I am looking forward to stepping back in August from classes and having a rest. And also hoping to use the time to consider how I can step back from some personal and challenging situations my life is currently going through, not to avoid them but to step back and view things with a clearer perspective perhaps? It's all a work in progress!

What does stepping back mean for you? Can you step back and detach from results and enjoy the process? Is there anything in your life you could do with stepping back from? That you would benefit in creating some space from?

If if there isnt, what about just pausing and stepping back from the constant push push and forward rush of life? Would just pausing between actions bring any benefits?

This week I created a sequence around the warrior poses, Virabadrasana I, II and III. The sequence was intended to bring focus and strength to the participants, encompassing a warrior mindset, but also support the running idea behind it, and question, 'who am I?'.

I asked at the beginning for the class to have a self check in, thoughts, emotions, the body, energy, and then to hold onto that place of observation and awareness from where the check in is made.

As the warrior poses unfolded, I brought in the story of the warriors, suggesting that any state change, or impact on energy, from being the warrior could be seen as a story like the ones we live.

This and other questions throughout were to lend weight to the idea that the true self is the unchanging, permanent awareness, behind the mind. Everything else is just weather!

This quote, from Pema Chodron, captures the essence of what I was trying to bring to the class on a philosophical level. We wound down with a visualisation drawing the sky into the body.

Vinyasa flow power yoga at Chesham Town Hall Monday and Saturday mornings at 9.30am.

Build strength, stamina and flexibility inside and out!

After the last couple weeks working on opening the hips, using a routine flowing between pigeon and lizard, I decided this week, and next, to go for a balancing sequence.

Not only were there a variety of balancing poses, warrior 3, half moon (pictured) but also some up and down flowing movements to test balance in transitions.

I also invited an intention to maintain balance inside so if there was wobbling in the poses or flow, hopefully an element of internal equanimity could be found.

We ended with sama vritti breath which is a balancing pranayama, also called equal breathing, with the option of retention or not.

Next week I will combine the shorter flows into a longer one.

This week's class was created for crow pose or kakasana both to give some foundations to the pose, as well as moving and working the body so it would feel easier to enter the pose. We worked on the core and hip flexion, as well as the bandhas (lifting energy locks), particularly hasta bandha (hand lock).

It can take a while to nail crow pose (it did for me) so I hope that it was useful to start to build some decent foundations towards it for future practice.

The aim for my own practice this year has been working and playing with arm balances and inversions. I've a lot to learn and still working on my one legged crow (which I am finding difficult and challenging) and it may take months to get there but I really enjoy trying (and the regular face planting helps keep my ego in check đŸ˜‚).

It was lovely to have such a long break over August when I got to do less and be more. But it is also good to be back in the swing of things, likely sweeter because of a break!

For the next few weeks, the theme will revolve around the five pillars of Baptiste power yoga; vinyasa (flowing between poses with breath), ujjayi (ocean breath), drishti (focusing on one spot), tapas (inner fire or discipline) and the bandhas (energy locks in the body).

My first routine was created with drishti in mind; in the first sequence everything was forward facing, including the pelvis, where the natural choice of drishti was more limited, for example, up, down or facing forward, or to the floor with balancing poses, such as warrior 3.

The two other sequences, worked with the side body, where focus was often more about personal choice and what feels right, and lastly a third sequence involving twisting (including reverse half moon in the pic), which had both natural places for the gaze to fall as well as personal choice.

Drishti can really help still the mind in poses, as, of course, the more our eyes move the more information is sent through to the mind and it can really help reduce distractions helping to unite mind and body.
