When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like birthdays, play dates and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditions and are always busy doing something fun with their friends.
But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and homework a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parents and child alike.

This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people.

Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface.
Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted.

Please help me share awareness of this. Copy and paste (by touching and holding the text) onto your profile in honor of all children who are deemed "different". Our world would be far less beautiful without them.

***Early years and childcare vaccine confusion - an update***

PACEY has now received the following information from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the NHS. They have confirmed that the vaccine appointment booking system has now been amended to reflect the fact that childcare and early years practitioners are not eligible for vaccination as part of the social care workforce unless they are caring for clinically extremely vulnerable children. DHSC has confirmed that childcare or early years practitioners who have received their vaccine will not be fined. However if you have made an appointment and are not eligible, DHSC has confirmed you must cancel the appointment.

PACEY has asked DHSC to clarify what happens to individuals who have received their first vaccination and will be due a second within 12 weeks. As soon as we have clarity, we will update our FAQs.
We continue to lobby for all childcare and early years practitioners, including childminders and nannies, to be prioritised for vaccination once the most vulnerable are protected.

The NHS has issued the following to help:

Q I work in a school/early years setting – am I eligible as a social care worker?
A The vast majority of people working in school and early years settings are not classed as a frontline health or social care worker.

To qualify under this criteria you need to be providing face to face care or support to children or adults who are clinically extremely vulnerable to Covid-19.

In most cases people who are eligible, those who provide face to face care or support children or adults who are extremely vulnerable, should be contacted directly by their employer and been given a letter to say they are eligible.

If you wrongly booked an appointment as you don’t fit the above criteria you will be turned away at the vaccination service, so please cancel your booking so that someone in the eligible cohort doesn’t miss out on an appointment.

Don’t shoot the messenger but I heard a rumour that nannies qualify to book a vaccine under the social care definition.
Call 119 to confirm but I’ve heard of a few nannies that have been able to book vaccinations so far.

This is so far removed from ok I’m speechless. (Rochester in the USA, not UK)

Police officers in Rochester, New York, handcuffed and pepper-sprayed a 9-year-old girl while responding to what a police official called a report of "family trouble" in an incident sharply criticized by city officials.
