Nursery starts from two at Acorn Nursery. 🌱

It’s something quite a few families don’t realise.

We welcome children from two years old into our calm, friendly nursery, where their days are built around play, exploring, getting involved and following the things that spark their interest.

For a two-year-old, that might mean getting messy, investigating something outdoors, joining in with an activity for five minutes and then wandering off to something completely different. That’s all part of how they learn.

And because Acorn Nursery is small, we have time to get to know each child and help them settle into nursery life at a pace that works for them.

Funded childcare may also be available for eligible families, and we’re happy to help you understand the options.

“Will they make friends?”

It’s something lots of parents wonder about when their child starts nursery.

And friendships at this age can start in the simplest ways.

Sitting next to each other with a book. Getting involved in the same activity. Taking turns. Exploring something together. Or both deciding that this is the toy they absolutely need at exactly the same moment. 😄

Children don't all make friends in the same way or at the same pace.

Some will jump straight in. Others might spend a little while watching before they feel ready to join in.

At Acorns Nursery, being a smaller nursery gives us time to get to know the children and help them feel comfortable as those little connections begin to grow.

There’s no rush. Sometimes friendship starts simply by finding someone who wants to do the same thing you do.

One of the questions we're often asked is, "What if my child is quite shy?"

The truth is, every child is different.
Some children walk through the door ready to explore everything straight away. Others prefer to watch for a little while before joining in. Both are completely normal.

Because we're a small nursery, we have the time to get to know each child as an individual. We learn what makes them smile, what interests them and how we can help them feel comfortable at their own pace.

There's no expectation for children to settle in the same way. We simply meet them where they are.

Today we've been busy making patterns with our peg boards.

Some of the children chose one of the pattern cards to copy, while others decided to make up their own colourful designs. There was lots of counting, colour matching and deciding what should come next as they worked through each challenge.

I always enjoy seeing how the children approach the same activity in completely different ways. Some like to follow the picture, while others are keen to see where their own ideas take them!

In maths this week, we've been continuing our work on patterns.

Last week we explored patterns using peg boards, and this week we took our learning outside with flowers, herbs and ice cubes. The children had great fun creating their own repeating patterns using the different colours, shapes and textures.

The ice cubes certainly helped to keep us cool in the warm weather, although we did have to work a little quicker as they began to melt! 🌸🧊

It's always lovely to see how the children take the same idea and explore it in different ways.

Last week our sound of the week was 'j'.

We spotted lots of words beginning with j, talked about them together and, of course, there was only one thing for it... we had to make some jelly!

The children loved helping to mix it before watching it change as it set. It certainly made learning our 'j' sound a little more memorable... and much tastier too! 🍓

I wonder what we'll discover with our next sound...
