Today we've been busy making patterns with our peg boards.

Some of the children chose one of the pattern cards to copy, while others decided to make up their own colourful designs. There was lots of counting, colour matching and deciding what should come next as they worked through each challenge.

I always enjoy seeing how the children approach the same activity in completely different ways. Some like to follow the picture, while others are keen to see where their own ideas take them!

In maths this week, we've been continuing our work on patterns.

Last week we explored patterns using peg boards, and this week we took our learning outside with flowers, herbs and ice cubes. The children had great fun creating their own repeating patterns using the different colours, shapes and textures.

The ice cubes certainly helped to keep us cool in the warm weather, although we did have to work a little quicker as they began to melt! 🌸🧊

It's always lovely to see how the children take the same idea and explore it in different ways.

Last week our sound of the week was 'j'.

We spotted lots of words beginning with j, talked about them together and, of course, there was only one thing for it... we had to make some jelly!

The children loved helping to mix it before watching it change as it set. It certainly made learning our 'j' sound a little more memorable... and much tastier too! 🍓

I wonder what we'll discover with our next sound...

With the warm weather this week, we made the most of being outside.

After watching our ducklings enjoy their first swim, the children were inspired to create their own water run using the guttering and rubber ducks. Before long, they were racing the ducks, pouring water, experimenting with different routes and seeing which duck would reach the bottom first!

Sometimes the simplest ideas create the biggest excitement, and there was plenty of laughter as everyone had a turn.

A perfect way to cool down on a sunny afternoon! ☀️🦆💦

Yesterday was a very exciting day for our ducklings... they had their very first swim!

The children loved watching them paddle around the water, chatting about what they were doing and cheering them on. There were lots of smiles (from the children and the adults!) as we watched them discover the water for the first time.

The excitement didn't stop there. When we went outside, the children decided to set up their own duck races using our water run and rubber ducks. It was lovely to see them taking an idea they'd enjoyed and making it their own through play.

We've certainly had a very splashy day at Little Acorns! 🦆💦
