This is so important for parents to understand- work on you to help your children.
We spend so much energy searching for the right words, the right technique, the right response to a hard parenting moment, when the thing that actually shapes the outcome most is something we rarely think about at all, the state of our own body in that moment. ๐ซ
Children are constantly reading the emotional climate of the adults around them, especially the ones they depend on most. Before your child processes your words, their nervous system is already responding to your tone, your breathing, the tension in your shoulders, whether your energy feels settled or activated.
This is co-regulation, and it means your internal state doesn't just influence the interaction, it often determines it, sometimes before either of you has said a single word.
This is why regulating yourself first isn't a nice extra step, it's foundational.
๐๐ผ A parent who's activated, tense, rushed, on edge, walks into a hard moment already adding fuel to it, even with the gentlest words chosen carefully in advance.
๐๐ผ A parent who takes even a few seconds to breathe, to settle, to come back into their own body before responding, changes the entire emotional texture of what happens next, often without needing to say anything different at all. โจ
None of this means suppressing your own feelings or pretending to be calm when you're not, that's not regulation, that's performance. It means genuinely tending to your own nervous system first, because your child's capacity to settle is so often borrowed directly from yours.

Language is very important.
Research shows that the language adults use plays an important role in children's social-emotional development, communication skills, and sense of security. Responsive, supportive language helps strengthen the caregiver-child relationship and teaches children that their thoughts and feelings matter. While it's not realistic to respond perfectly in every moment, making small shifts in the words we choose can encourage cooperation, problem-solving, and emotional regulation over time. Children learn how to communicate by listening to the adults around them. Replacing dismissive phrases with ones that invite conversation helps create opportunities for connection and learning. These everyday interactions may seem small, but they can have a lasting impact on a child's development.
