Week 8 Cheltenham Morning Class - Patterns in the Landscape - Water colour and Wax Resist

This week was all about developing our water colour techniques further by introducing wax resist. We took inspiration from wonderful countryside images to create our own landscape compositions showing fields and the undulating folds of land. Studying a variety of reference images we were able to identify so many different patterns in the landscape and to capture these with a wax resist.

Using our learned watercolour techniques, wet on wet to create blooming, wet on dry for our more precise areas, layering colours and working with tone to create the perspective within the picture we painted stunning personal compositions celebrating the beauty of pattern and texture in natural landscapes. Absolutely stunning work everyone!

Week 7 - Cheltenham Morning Class - Heather Fields - Watercolour Techniques
This week, we explored expressive watercolour techniques through painting atmospheric heather fields. Learning and then practising wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing, and dry brush techniques to create depth, texture, and movement.

Our focus was on balancing technical control with creative interpretation — simplifying forms, enhancing colour harmony, and conveying mood. Planning our pictures and which techniques we would use, we were able to paint beautiful landscapes that combined structure together with spontaneity .

Week 6 - Cheltenham Morning Class - Lisbon’s Trams - Line and Ink Washes

In this lesson, we aimed to capture the charm and movement of Lisbon’s iconic trams using the line and wash technique. Starting with loose ink lines to sketch the tram, buildings, and street perspective, we then added transparent ink washes to bring the scene to life. This approach allowed us to demonstrate spontaneity and simplicity, focusing on light, rhythm, and atmosphere to create lively urban sketches full of Lisbon’s character.
