Weaning….can we talk about how hard it actually is?!
Despite weaning being something I quite literally teach as part of my early postnatal work, I still find it one of the hardest parts of early parenting.
You prepare a lovely little meal, they refuse to even touch it.
You spend ages cutting everything into the right size, texture etc, and most of it ends up on the floor.
Then there’s the gagging. Even when you know gagging is a normal part of learning to eat and is different from choking, watching your baby do it can still make your heart stop for a second.
One day they absolutely love something, the next day, you’ve apparently deeply offended them by putting the exact same food on their plate.
And the mess. So much mess.
I think we sometimes make weaning sound like this lovely milestone where babies happily explore colourful plates of food. Sometimes it is. Other days it’s cleaning avocado out of somebody’s hair while wondering whether they actually swallowed anything at all.
A few things I try to remind myself:
-It’s a learning process, not something babies are expected to master straight away.
Repeatedly refusing a food doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll never eat it.
-Gagging can be frightening to watch, but it’s a normal protective reflex as babies learn how to manage food. Knowing the difference between gagging and choking is really important.
-Milk remains an important part of their diet while they gradually learn about solid foods.
-Sometimes the best thing you can do is take the pressure off both of you.
Knowing the theory doesn’t magically make parenting easy when it’s your own child sitting in front of you.
Anyone else find weaning much harder than they expected? What has been the hardest part for you?

The motherhood juxtaposition ❤️🩹 Returning to teaching at three months postpartum was not on my bingo card and although I ADORE my job and feel honoured that this is my little business, I do feel a tugging guilt that my little one isn’t getting the best of me, the missed baby groups the extra time in the carrier, the missed singing and sensory sessions. Whilst not posting enough on social media I’ve accepted something has to give a little. So here I am sending love and solidarity to all the Mums and Parents out there in the difficult turmoil of building a future for your little people whilst also trying to be as present as can be in the now.
Here for the honesty, here for my beautiful families, here for my own ❤️
(Also big thanks to for the photo)

What If My Partner’s More Nervous Than Me?
Birth partners often feel pressure to have all the answers. But you don’t need to be an expert to be an incredible support. You just need some basic knowledge, a calm presence, and a willingness to be involved.
We cover everything partners need to feel confident and useful, from how to advocate, to what comfort techniques actually help.
If you’re nervous, you’re not alone. That’s why preparing together is one of the most important things you can do as a couple before baby arrives.
