In PSHE, Year 2 have been discussing their emotions and thinking about what makes them feel a certain way. After some fantastic group work, they then enjoyed taking their learning outdoors and getting creative in the Forest School area.

Under floodlights for the first time, the top tier of the Cheltenham District Primary Athletics structure (the Cotswold Shield - Division One of Three) finally took place at the Prince of Wales Stadium in atmospheric conditions.

Ashley Manor were one of 10 schools competing and, despite the event taking place out of season and at the third attempt, there were some outstanding individual performances. One pupil threw over 44 metres on their way to gold in the Vortex throw, while another took silver with a throw of just under 35 metres.

On the track, one pupil was 2nd in the 75m sprint and another finished 3rd in his 50m final, straight after playing rugby all afternoon! Another pupil was just outside the medals in 4th, while another also made the 75m final and finished 6th in a very tight race with little between all of the runners.

Sadly, only the two Year 4 relay teams made the final, but credit to them for that and for earning points for the team by finishing 6th. The other teams were edged out of the final by finishing outside the top three.

In the long-distance races, one pupil came home 5th after a brave run from the front, while three others finished 6th. Another finished 7th and another 9th – all worked hard in very tough fields.

The final points tally is an unofficial and very pleasing 57 points, so well done to everyone who was there on the night – big team effort from us all!

Year 3 have been busy learning all about contractions in English this week. We discovered how two words can be shortened and joined together using an apostrophe, for example do not → don’t and I am → I’m. The children enjoyed learning through songs and games before working in small groups to play a contraction matching game. They then put their new knowledge into practice by completing some fantastic work in their books. We’re very impressed with how quickly they’ve picked it up!

Well done to our Year 5 and 6 girls, who competed in a series of friendly hockey matches against Hatherop Castle last week. It was fantastic to see the girls putting their skills into practice, with some excellent teamwork, dribbling and goal-scoring on display. The girls worked hard for one another, showed great determination and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play some competitive matches. Well done, girls!

National Poetry Day – Wonder!
We have had a wonderful week celebrating National Poetry Day through the theme of Wonder, taking part in a range of exciting Foundation Arts activities, poetry has inspired curiosity across the school.

Reception enjoyed woodlice hunting, crafting and reciting their poem, 'Woodlouse' whilst under the fun of the parachute in the hall. Year 1 and Year 2 studied the poem 'Six Ways to Look at a Leaf', with Year 1 being mesmerised by leaf dances as they observed how different leaves from around the school grounds fall to the floor. While Year 2 took leaf rubbings, looking at veins, made leaf mobiles in outdoor learning and created a class acrostic poem.

Year 3 and 4 children explored The Great Big Clean Up by Christian Foley, experimenting with rhyme, rhythm, repetition and exciting vocabulary to create poems that moved from a problem to a hopeful solution.
Meanwhile, Year 4 were inspired to design their own earth-saving machines, including giant ocean vacuums and mini litter-bin backpacks for seahorses! Working brilliantly as a team, they sketched their ideas in the library and explored expanded noun phrases and ambitious vocabulary. Next week, they will bring their inventions to life through poetry, imagining how their creations could help change the world.

In Year 5, the children read the poem, 'Citizen Science and the Climate Detectives' by Liv Torc. In the final two verses of this poem, the narrator talks about the features his school would need to be a greener school, including a moat, a gloopy lake and half-rotten logs stuffed with earwigs. The children then worked in pairs to write their own poem about making their school greener!
Finally, Year 6 thought carefully about the theme of Wonder, creating their own imaginative questions and ideas. We particularly liked, 'wonder is... a kaleidoscopic sunrise', and 'wonder is... going for a walk and drinking in the view!'

It has been a fantastic week of creativity, curiosity and a real sense of wonder!

This week, Pre-School Hazel have been exploring the sound ‘t’ through lots of fun and practical activities. The children have been learning to recognise and hear the ‘t’ sound in different words while taking part in activities such as playing tennis and enjoying a tea party. These activities have encouraged the children to listen carefully, practise saying the sound, and begin to identify words that start with ‘t’. It has been lovely to see the children getting involved, having fun and developing their phonics skills through play!
