✨ Alumni Spotlight: Safrina Kamis, BA Business and Management, 2011 ✨

"Studying at ARU was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life."

Originally from Brunei, Safrina Kamis moved to Cambridge to study Business and Management, an experience that challenged her to step outside her comfort zone, broaden her perspective and connect with people from a variety of cultures.

Today, Safrina is the Corporate Affairs and Marketing Executive at Angkasa Oud Agarwood Company, a business she proudly runs alongside her husband. In her role, she oversees corporate communications, marketing and brand development, helping to share the story of Brunei's natural wild agarwood with customers across the globe.

Alongside their agarwood business, Safrina and her husband also operate a duck farm as part of their commitment to sustainability. The farm was established to repurpose by-products from their agarwood operations as duck bedding, creating a more circular and environmentally responsible approach across both businesses.

Reflecting on her time at ARU, Safrina says the knowledge, confidence and international experience she gained continue to shape both her personal and professional journey.

ARU is inviting original proposals that explore how creative practice can:

🤖 Humanise artificial intelligence and emerging technologies
🌍 Reveal the social, cultural, and environmental dimensions of technology
🏙️ Imagine futures where technological progress remains deeply connected to people, place, and community

This is a great chance to contribute to a growing conversation about how creativity can influence the development of ethical, responsible, and humanity-centred AI. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to:

💡Participate in a unique Creativity × AI workshop series, testing the SAGE AI Framework through mentoring and collaborative learning.

🖼️ Exhibit work as part of a Creativity × AI Living Lab at the Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery.

📖 Contribute to publications and digital outputs exploring creativity and responsible AI.

🏢 Be considered for commissioned work at AVEVA's new global headquarters at 101 Cambridge Science Park.

Cardiac experts at ARU are carrying out a ground-breaking international trial designed to reduce the risk of patients developing heart failure after a heart attack – and have recruited the first global patient.

The patient at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC), who has been involved in previous research into the treatment of heart attacks, is the first in the world to be recruited to a new trial, called REVITALISE, that could help save lives and improve care.

Researchers hope the study could transform care for heart attack patients by reducing the number who go on to develop heart failure, helping to improve both survival rates and long-term quality of life.

🎉📚 Congratulations to Kate Rolfe on winning the Carnegie Medal for Illustration 2026! 📚🎉

Kate's picture book, Wiggling Words, is a joyful and inventive story about creativity, imagination and problem-solving. When letters tumble from the page, they transform into flowers, creatures and eventually an entire world, encouraging readers to see words not just as something to read, but as something to play with and create.

Inspired by her own experiences as a dyslexic reader, Kate's book celebrates different ways of thinking and the limitless possibilities of language.

Reflecting on her award win, Kate said:

"Winning the Carnegie Medal for Wiggling Words is just such a mind-blowingly amazing honour! It’s been wonderful to see Wiggling Words resonate with so many readers, and I’m over the moon that a story celebrating imagination, creativity and different ways of thinking has touched so many people."

Kate also credits her time at ARU's Cambridge School of Art for helping shape the book, drawing inspiration from experimenting in the letterpress room and making the most of the University's creative facilities. "The freedom to spend days playing, exploring and making without worrying about the outcome was a huge part of helping me discover the creative voice that eventually became Wiggling Words."

Congratulations to new ARU graduate Anantjeet Kaur, who has won the Illustration category at the 2026 Batsford Prize, one of the UK's leading student art awards.

Anantjeet, who studied MA Children's Book Illustration at our Cambridge School of Art, impressed judges with Terrace Tales – a beautifully crafted concertina book inspired by the rooftop terraces of her childhood in India and the sense of community they foster.

Her success comes amidst a remarkable run of achievements for ARU illustrators, with fellow student Oryn Redford named as a runner-up in the same category and several recent graduates shortlisted for prestigious national illustration awards.

Reflecting on her future plans, Anantjeet hopes to continue sharing authentic stories from her culture through illustration and one day establish a children's library in Punjab to promote the joy of reading.

Wishing Anantjeet every success as she embarks on the next chapter of her creative career!
