It takes a lot to genuinely shock an educator with over twenty years of experience, but the Department for Education’s latest campaign has crossed a new line - even for an educator whose formative teaching years were under Mr Gove.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has dismissed the massive public backlash to their Gemma Collins reality-TV stunt as "outright snobbery."
If expecting the government department entrusted with our children’s futures to communicate with intellectual weight and gravity is snobbery, then I am happy to plead guilty. The government is deliberately confusing 'snobbery' with 'standards'.

At TutorElite, I spend my days teaching children the value of metacognitive thinking, resilience, and deferred gratification. Reality television champions the exact opposite: manufactured drama and instant reward. To see the DfE bypass serious discourse in favour of cheap social media clout is not just disappointing; it makes a mockery of the academic rigour parents work so hard to instil.

As someone who voted for this government hoping for a return to institutional seriousness, this feels like a profound betrayal. Right now, families are operating under a crushing burden of anxiety—locked in exhausting battles for SEND funding and fighting for basic EHCP provisions.
To answer that daily reality with a flippant, celebrity-driven teaser forces a deeply troubling question: Is the Department for Education, in its current guise, even fit for purpose?

I have just published a full thought piece exploring why this campaign fails our children and what true, anxiety-free educational leadership should look like.

Standards Over Snobbery: Why the DfE’s Reality TV Stunt Fails Our Children It takes a great deal to genuinely shock an educator with over twenty years of experience. I am accustomed to the shifting sands of government policy, the perpetual funding constraints, and the bureaucratic hurdles that make up the modern educational landscape. However, the Department for Education....

What really matters when choosing a tutor?

When you look at the feedback from the families I work with, the academic results are a given. But what truly dominates the conversation are words like confidence, support, enjoy, and fun.

In my years as a Headteacher and now at TutorElite, I have seen first-hand that preparation for the 11+ or entrance exams does not need to be a stressful ordeal. My entire teaching framework is built on a single, proven premise: achievement without anxiety.

When a child feels genuinely supported and engaged, their natural ability shines through. That is when real, lasting progress happens.
