FASD Grows Up – Part 1 The personal journey
September is FASD Awareness month, and it will also mark 23 years since my wife, and I started to live with people who have FASD. It changed our lives.
They still live with us and have taught me more about how brains function, how learning happens and how memory works than any of my teacher training or classroom experience ever did.
For FASD Awareness Month 2026, the theme is FASD Grows Up, so I feel that it’s time to present my take on how FASD has grown up in our family, some of the ups and downs, but also locally in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and nationally in the UK. It's going to be a few posts over September so please be patient. This is the first post that sets the scene and considers how FASD has impacted our personal lives.

It’s a journey spanning 23 years. That journey continues, and I have no idea how far along any of the various pathways we are traveling.
It couldn’t have been written without the understanding, support and friendship of hundreds of people. Some are still at our side; all have played a role in developing my understanding. If you are one of them, Maureen and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
