Yesterday, our Year 10 students had the fantastic opportunity to attend an engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Taster Day hosted by the University of Greenwich at their Medway Campus.

Throughout the visit, students took part in a variety of interactive, hands-on activities designed to introduce them to the exciting world of STEM and the diverse range of careers available across these industries. The sessions encouraged students to think creatively, solve problems, and apply their learning in real-world scenarios, providing valuable insight into the skills and knowledge required for future careers.

It was fantastic to see every student fully engaged throughout the day, demonstrating enthusiasm, curiosity, and a genuine interest in exploring the opportunities available to them. Experiences like these play an important role in helping young people broaden their aspirations, understand the pathways available after school, and make informed decisions about their future education, training, and career choices.

A huge thank you to everyone at the University of Greenwich who helped organise and deliver such an informative and inspiring event. Partnerships like these are invaluable in enriching our students' education and providing meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.

We look forward to attending many more events like this in the future, continuing to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed.

A huge thank you to Holly from the University of Hertfordshire for visiting Waterfront UTC to deliver an informative and engaging UCAS workshop for our Post-16 students.

The session focused on the UCAS application process, with particular emphasis on one of the areas students often find most challenging – the personal statement. Holly provided clear guidance on what a personal statement is, how it should be structured, what universities are looking for, and how students can effectively showcase their skills, experiences and aspirations.

Although many of our students are considering apprenticeships or employment after education, everyone was encouraged to engage with the session. It's not uncommon for students to change their plans during their final year, and the skills involved in writing a strong personal statement are equally valuable when applying for degree apprenticeships and other competitive opportunities.

Providing students with early access to this guidance ensures they are well prepared to make informed decisions about their future and gives them the confidence to begin the application process when the time comes.

We are incredibly grateful to Holly and the University of Hertfordshire's ambassador team for their continued support in helping our students navigate their next steps after education. Partnerships like these play an important role in broadening aspirations and ensuring young people are equipped with the knowledge they need to succeed.

We look forward to continuing these workshops with future cohorts and supporting even more students as they begin planning their pathways beyond the classroom.

On Monday 6th July, Waterfront attended the annual District Athletics Championships with our largest team ever!

Despite the extremely hot conditions, our pupils represented the school brilliantly throughout the day. It was fantastic to see them competing with determination while also enjoying the opportunity to meet and interact with students from other schools.

Many of our athletes were competing at the event for the first time, and the effort, resilience and positive attitude they showed were outstanding. Several pupils volunteered to take part in events simply to ensure Waterfront gained valuable points, demonstrating excellent teamwork and commitment.

There were some particularly notable performances on the day:

🏃🏻Mason produced a fantastic run in the 1500m, finishing in an impressive 4th place.
🏃🏻‍♂️ Adrian won his 100m heat and progressed to the final, where he finished 5th overall.
🪨 LW stepped in at the last minute to compete in the shot put and went on to secure an excellent silver medal.
🥇 MF delivered a superb performance in the javelin, earning a well-deserved gold medal.

Overall, it was a fantastic day filled with energy, enthusiasm and great sporting spirit. A huge congratulations to every member of the team for representing Waterfront so positively. We are incredibly proud of you all!

What an incredible opportunity for our students! 🏎️

Thirteen students from Waterfront UTC recently visited Aston university to begin their journey into the STEM Racing in Schools – a nationally recognised programme that combines engineering, design, teamwork and innovation in an exciting Formula 1-inspired challenge.

Working in teams, students will take on the roles found within a real F1 team, including designers, social media managers, pit crew and project managers, before designing and manufacturing their own miniature racing car. Although the cars are only 30cm long, there is a huge amount of engineering involved, with students considering aerodynamics, lightweight materials, precision manufacturing and custom-designed components before racing against other schools on a purpose-built track.

During the visit, our students attended a series of inspiring seminars covering race strategy, design techniques, the CAD process, while also hearing about a team who progressed from regional champions to global finalists, earning the opportunity to compete at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix against schools from around the world.

Our students were a credit to the UTC throughout the day. They demonstrated excellent engagement, asked thoughtful questions about launching the competition at Waterfront UTC, and embraced every opportunity to learn from the experts. They even put their reaction times to the test and experienced the thrill of launching model race cars down the track in under three seconds!

Experiences like these perfectly demonstrate how STEM education can inspire the next generation of engineers, designers and innovators by bringing learning to life through real-world challenges.
