👩‍🌾 What does it really take to build more equitable agrifood systems? 🌾

We are delighted to highlight a new review by feminist scholar Professor Lyn Ossome [Director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR)], offering an insightful commentary on the landmark FAO, Natural Resources Institute and African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) report – The Status of Women in Agrifood Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In her review, Prof. Ossome brings a critical feminist lens to the report's findings, urging researchers and decision-makers to move beyond traditional "productivist" views of agriculture.

Key takeaways from Prof. Ossome’s review:
🤲Centring the care economy: Good policy must treat women not just as agricultural producers, but as reproductive subjects whose care work sustains daily and generational survival.
🌐Accounting for non-market spheres: In the absence of adequate state welfare, social reproduction relies heavily on non-capitalist networks, kinship structures, and community organising – spheres that agrifood policies must recognise and support.
⚖️Addressing structural harm: Gender inequality and gender-based violence in agrifood systems cannot be isolated from broader economic struggles, historical colonial-capitalist legacies, and unsafe working conditions.
🤝Recognising women's agency: The rapid rise of women’s financial cooperatives and producer groups represents a powerful social movement, expanding women's bargaining power and capacity for rights-based claims.

Prof. Ossome leaves us with a vital question: How can policy and practice better account for these often-overlooked, non-market spheres of social reproduction to build food systems centred truly around people?

🌍 We are hiring: Postdoctoral Research Fellow & Impact Officer (NRI) 🌍

The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow & Impact Officer to work at the frontier of SDG‑aligned prosperity and peacebuilding in fragile settings.

This is not a conventional postdoc. It’s a highly applied role for someone ready to move quickly between rigorous interdisciplinary research, solution co‑design, and real‑world impact delivery.

Imagine stepping into a tense border region or a climate‑stressed community shaped by violence. Where others see fragility, you see systems that can be redesigned, institutions that can be strengthened, and futures that can be reclaimed. That’s the mindset we’re looking for.

This role is best suited to candidates who already:
🔎Publish as sole or first author in Q1 journals across peace, conflict, fragility, development, climate and/or environmental studies
🔎Work as applied development researchers with significant field‑embedded experience
🔎Have designed, piloted, evaluated or scaled SDG‑facing interventions in fragile or low‑income contexts
🔎Can translate research into policy‑relevant insights, practical tools, and measurable community‑level impact
