Over the past year, GEM has been working with seven museums, or groups of museums, in England that have been selected to participate in a new Inclusive Pathways Action Research Programme, made possible through the Investment Principles Support Organisation (IPSO) Programme from Arts Council England.

Join GEM to find out about the inclusive pathways action research projects, aimed at unlocking barriers to work experience and work placements.

We are excited to announce our next keynote speaker for : Learning is Digital?

Esther Appleyard - Fox is the Head of Screen South’s Accentuate Programme. She has been leading initiatives for deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people to drive change in the cultural sector for over 16 years and won the National Lottery Award for Heritage in 2023. Most recently devising and delivering the landmark projects Curating for Change and Curating Visibility, working with over 30 museums across England.

She is a disabled person and was a community Co-I on a large AHRC project, D4D Disability and Community: Dis/engagement, Dis/enfranchisement, Dis/parity and Dissent, where she followed an arts-based research approach. She was also the sector lead on the AHRC project, The Sensational Museum. She particularly has an interest in how creative digital technologies can enable more accessible and meaningful experiences for deaf, disabled and neurodivergent visitors to engage with museums, heritage sites and collections.

We are looking forward to welcoming Esther to GEM Conference 2026. Don't miss her keynote presentation, Wednesday 9 September.

Andrew has been Chief Executive of Art UK since 2003. He has responsibility for the strategic direction of the organisation and plays a major role fundraising for the charity. He led the organisation from being a publisher of hardcopy catalogues of oil paintings in public ownership to being the digital platform of the UK’s national art collection bringing together 3,500 institutions in one of the biggest ever arts partnerships in the UK.

Oonagh Murphy is Director of the Responsible AI Cultural Leaders Academy at Arts Council England, Senior Lecturer in Digital Culture at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a BRAID Research Fellow. With a background spanning academia, policy, and research leadership, her work focuses on how organisations and societies can navigate the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence responsibly.

Drawing on her work at the intersection of technology, culture, governance, and public policy, Oonagh will explore the future digital for the cultural learning sector.

Join us on Friday 11 September for Opportunities and Challenges of AI for Museum Learning, exploring how AI is transforming learning and engagement across museums and the heritage sector.

This panel features Sian Shaw, Digital Content Manager (History, Heritage and Young People) at Westminster Abbey, who has developed a digital learning programme for the 1,000-year-old church, helping students, teachers and families engage with the Abbey regardless of their location.

Joining Sian is Anra Kennedy, Consultant Director at The Audience Agency, who works with museums and heritage organisations in the UK and internationally to help them navigate digital transformation.

This discussion will also feature Jeremy Kimmel FMA, Arts, Heritage and Engagement Director at The Amelia Scott, where he leads inclusive cultural programmes, community engagement initiatives and heritage projects that connect people with places, stories and collections.

Saira is a manager in the Schools and Communities Department at Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that cares for six of the most remarkable palaces in the world: the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, Banqueting House, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle.
