Planes aren’t the only things doing some nice flying around Rochester Airport - although to be fair, it’s a lot harder to do THAT in a Cessna!

When you're a perfectly nice Cessna 172SP, but a Spitfire decides to join the photo shoot... The aviation equivalent of your cool older brother showing up!

“Why do you call the planes things like 'Tango Mike'?” That's a question a recent visitor to our office asked, and we love those kinds of questions!
Our planes aren’t just “the blue one” or “the one that looks like a tube of Aquafresh” (although we absolutely know which ones you mean 😄).
Every aircraft has a registration, a unique identifier like a number plate. When pilots say those letters on the radio, we use the phonetic alphabet to clearly differentiate them. To make messages more succinct, once the full registration has been read and acknowledged over the radio it can be abbreviated to just the last two letters, so "Golf Charlie Golf Tango Mike" becomes "Golf Tango Mike". Around the office we don't need more than the last two letters, so TM is just "Tango Mike". It’s one of the little things that makes aviation feel like its own language... but before long, you’ll find yourself saying “India Alpha” or "Charlie Whiskey" without even thinking about it!
And if you’re a newbie visiting us and have a question? Please go ahead and ask! 😊✈️
