Our Careers Programme aims to prepare students for a successful life after school, ensuring that they know about the wide range of post-16 options available to them. Last week we held our Post-16 Evening for Year 11s and their parents. We invited over 20 colleges, sixth forms and local employers to exhibit in a careers fair. Students and parents had the opportunity to meet each of the post-16 providers and ask questions about their courses, apprenticeships and training. They were also able to pick up information and materials to take home to carry out their own research.
Parents attended a talk given by our Assistant Head, Mrs Dunn, and a local post-16 provider where they learnt more about the different types of qualifications and levels, where these options could lead to in the future and the application process.
The event was a great success and our students had some brilliant conversations about the different things they would like to do when they leave school. They also learnt about what they will need to do to achieve these goals and the grades they will need to attain next year.
Ultimately this experience will help them to make their final decisions about post-16 as they start to make their applications to colleges, training and apprenticeship providers.
We would like to say a big thank you to all of the exhibitors who came along to support this event:

All of our Year 7s went on a field trip to Castleton last week to see first-hand what they have been learning about in their Geography classes. They have been studying geology and national parks and the trip allowed them to go underground to see some of the interesting features they have been hearing about at school.
The coach dropped the group off at the top of the broken road by Blue John Cavern and the students took in some great views of Mam Tor. The next stop was an underground tour at Treak Cliff Cavern which is famous for its unique large deposits of Blue John Stone as well as some incredible stalactites. From here the students walked down into Castleton via the historic Odin Mine crushing circle to have lunch outside the visitor centre.
Later this year Year 7s will be studying the Norman Conquest and castle design in their History lessons, and Peveril Castle provided them with a great example of this on the trip. Some of our speedier walking groups also had a chance to go fossil hunting in Cave Dale.
Mr Sellers, Head of Geography, said:
“I was really impressed with our Year 7 learners. The cavern staff commented on both how well engaged and how well behaved our students were. I'm really happy that our students got plenty out of it."

Well done to our Year 11s who took part in the annual Sponsored Walk to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust last week. It was third time lucky for our walkers, but despite the rain forecast this time around, it stayed dry and 80 students walked 6 miles through the beautiful Combs Valley. They stopped for tea at Hazelhurst farm along the way and celebrated their efforts with a brilliant barbeque put on by staff back at school.
We have been supporting Teenage Cancer Trust for 25 years now and last year the school raised over £2,600. This wonderful charity works to improve the cancer experience of young people aged 13-24 in the UK and money raised goes towards building and equipping specialist units in NHS hospitals.

After completing their GCSE exams, some of our Year 11 students, accompanied by school staff, headed into the Staffordshire Moorlands to complete the last section, the expedition, of their Duke of Edinburgh's award. Over the course of two days, carrying all of their food and equipment, they walked from Pym Chair to The Roaches, camping at the wonderful Gradbach Scout Camp.
The Duke of Edinburgh programme aims to empower young people, building confidence and resilience. We have one of the largest cohorts of secondary school students in Derbyshire participating and, importantly, we often have the best completion rate in Derbyshire.

Bookbuzz is a brilliant reading initiative which aims to encourage young people to read more and promote a life-long love of books. We have been taking part in this lovely BookTrust initiative for five years now and it means that every Year 7 gets the opportunity to choose a brand new book to take home and keep. Students get to select a title from a list of specially chosen books for their age group and there is always something to suit all interests and abilities.
A big thank you to the local businesses who have helped to fund the Bookbuzz programme this year, we were overwhelmed with the generous donations we received from our community. Thanks to their amazing support, we can comfortably take part in this inspiring initiative for the next couple of years.

Before the summer break, our Year 10 GCSE Drama students studied Children's Theatre, examining the immersive and exaggerated style of acting needed to engage a young audience. The groups looked at Julia Donaldson’s “The Gruffalo” and “Room on the Broom”, and they worked hard to prepare a performance for children at Buxton Infant School.
The young audience were thoroughly entertained by the show, laughing at the physical theatre and over-the-top vocal skills used by the students. The children asked the characters questions at the end, with our students responding ‘in role’ which was brilliant.
Well done to our drama students for some great performances, this was such an enjoyable experience for them and the primary school children. 🎭🤩

A huge congratulations to our students who achieved some superb GCSE results this year. We welcomed Year 11s and their parents into school during the summer to collect their results. It was fair to say that nerves were on edge as they arrived, however, it quickly become clear that their hard work had paid off, with many struggling to contain their emotions as the reality of their success sank in.
We are proud of a very strong performance in the core subjects of English, maths and science. And we are also delighted that our students have succeeded in a wide range of options, for example results are well above average in all three of the foreign languages that we offer.
Headteacher, Simon Grieves, said:
“The recent media coverage suggesting a return to 2019 pre-pandemic grading makes these results even more worthy of celebration, we’ve had some brilliant student performances across the ability range. We have learned since results day that our results are above national average in almost all subjects. These students have shown resilience and a real determination to succeed; this, coupled with the support of staff who have gone above and beyond, means that students are reaping the rewards today.”
These fantastic results will take them on to the next stages of their education or training, with students going on to study at a wide range of colleges and sixth forms, or to start apprenticeships. We are extremely proud of them and wish them the very best of luck in the future!

It has been wonderful to welcome our new Year 7 students into school this week. They have been excited about going into different lessons in a wide range of new subjects and, as always, they enjoyed their first secondary school lunch! All of our Year 7s have settled in brilliantly, it feels like they have always been here.
During tutor time, our new students learnt about break and lunchtime routines, collected their first timetables and then went straight into their lessons. Thanks to the brilliant transition sessions that many of them attended before the summer, lots of them already felt familiar with the school building and their teachers which was lovely to see. They then attended an assembly with our headteacher, Mr Grieves, to welcome them into the Chapel High community.
Headteacher, Simon Grieves, said,
“I am very proud of how our Year 7 have settled into school this week and am delighted that many are keen to tell me how much they are enjoying high school.”

Our Year 10s enjoyed an action-packed “Post-16 Week” at the end of June. The aim of this week is to encourage students to think about what they want to do when they leave school, to learn more about the world of work and to experience a college taster day. Students acquired lots of new knowledge and skills which will help them with decision-making and post-16 applications in Year 11.
They took part in a huge range of careers activities, including:
• Employer Speed Networking event
• Creating a CV
• Interview Techniques
• University education – session run by Derby University
• T Levels – session run by Buxton & Leek College
• Employability Skills workshop – session run by Live N Learn
• Writing a Personal Statement – application forms
• Workplace Detectives workshop – local employers & jobs
• Digital Skills workshop – Labour Market Information & online job searches
• College Taster Days - at Marple Sixth Form College, Macclesfield College & Stockport College
All Year 10s attended a Taster Day at a local college to give them real-life experience of studying at post-16 level. They took part in lessons in a wide range of subject areas, many of which they had never tried before, including Animal Care, Carpentry, Childcare, Criminology, Engineering, Hair & Beauty, Health & Social Care, Mechanics and Psychology. This was a great opportunity for students to meet college tutors, navigate their way around a campus and try out special equipment.
This busy week culminated with our Employer Speed Networking event where over 20 local employers set up stalls in our hall. Students took it in turns in small groups to visit each stall, asking questions about the company/organisation, finding out what their job is like and learning about the qualifications and/or training they have had to do. This event was a great success, giving our students the opportunity to speak directly to employers and learn more about a range of different jobs.
Students have been having some great discussions in school about their experiences during Post-16 Week and are starting to think about and plan their next steps. We are looking forward to our Post-16 Evening for students and their parents which will be held in school on Tuesday 26th September (6pm – 8pm). We have invited a range of local colleges and apprenticeship providers to have stalls in the restaurant, and there will also be talks for parents about post-16 options, levels of qualifications and the application process.

We have absolutely loved meeting our soon-to-be new Year 7s at the Transitions and Induction Events over the last few weeks. What a fantastic group of young people, your primary schools and parents should be very proud of you!
Our new students took part in a big selection of subject sessions to give them an idea of what secondary school classes will be like, including activities in Science, Drama, Modern Foreign Languages, Technology, Music and PE. They also enjoyed meeting members of their new tutor group, talking to their new teachers and navigating around the school building.
They worked so hard, behaved beautifully and made some new friends along the way. We were very proud to welcome them into our school community and are excited about seeing them all again in September. 😃

A group of Year 10s participated in the Science Competition at Stockport Grammar School last week. This event is aimed at students who have a real passion for science and it gives them the opportunity to use advanced lab equipment, engaging in science beyond the curriculum.
Teams were allocated famous scientist names and our team, “Pasteur”, competed in three challenges in each of the scientific disciplines: a chemistry-based titration challenge, a physics electromagnet experiment and a biology-based antibiotic resistance test. Our students had lots of fun competing and their favourite activity was in biology where they had to work together as a team to complete the many different stages of the experiment.
Miss Brooke, Deputy Head of Science, said: “I was very proud of our students and it was great to see them working alongside the Stockport Grammar sixth form pupils”.
Well done to students F Phillips, J Shaw, C Smith and D Fitzgerald, Team Captain, for representing our school so brilliantly.

We took Year 11 drama students and members of the Drama Club along to see “Little Shop of Horrors” at Buxton Opera House. Students tucked into a two-course meal at Pizza Express as an end of year treat before visiting the theatre to watch the horror comedy musical. The group thoroughly enjoyed the performance and marvelled at the madcap plot about a florist's assistant who cultivates a plant that feeds on human blood! The students were also amazed at the show-stopping vocals and the style of the show.
Seren A said, “Absolutely loved the cast, and it made me cry.”
Drama Club has now finished for this academic year as rehearsals for the next school musical, “Matilda”, are now well underway. Watch this space for more news about this soon…

There's also a wonderful selection of comic strips, artwork and poetry, all done by our very talented students. A huge well done to the team for another great issue.
Everyone is welcome to contribute to The Summ’it. You could create a puzzle, put together a recipe or write about something you are passionate about. Any students who would like to get involved should see Miss Hibbert, our School Librarian, to find out more.

Our Year 10 GCSE Drama groups have been busy performing in our studio performance space in preparation for their practical exams next year. The students worked hard as a theatre company, learning their lines and rehearsing their plays to performance standard, before showcasing their work to a packed studio of friends and family.
Group 1 performed “Every Chorus Tells a Story: Antigone”, a play which explores the story of Antigone as she struggles with her loyalties which are divided between her dead brother and living uncle. The tale unfolds through the narration of the Chorus in the classic Greek theatrical tradition.
Group 2 performed “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse”, a hilarious guide on how to survive in the event of the collapse of civilisation. Should you attempt to reason with the undead, or go to fight them? Performers gave the audience some tips on what to do if the reanimated corpses of your neighbours try to hunt you down!
Along with being an entertaining and creative experience for all, the students have now had a successful run-through before their real practical exam later in Year 11. Well done to all involved and thank you to the supportive audiences who attended.

Congratulations to our school Wind Band who performed at the Buxton Festival of Music, Speech and Drama recently. They played brilliantly and impressed the judges with their “confident and enjoyable” performances of Seven Nation Army, Feel My Love and Mission Impossible. The judges awarded the group with a highly commended mark of 86 out of 100, just one mark away from a coveted distinction.
Well done to all members of the band, this is a great achievement. We hope that this will give them the confidence to share their talent and take part in more performances in the future. 🎼🎷🎺

Our “Love 2 Perform” concert was a great success with students from all year groups showcasing their huge range of talents and interests. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to perform in front of family and friends, and we saw a variety of formats including solos, duets and groups in a wide selection of genres.
The evening was hosted by our very own “Ant and Dec”, Charlie P and Oliver H, who did a brilliant job of entertaining the audience and introducing each act.
Highlights of the show included a hilarious mime of Queen's “I want to break free” and an impromptu version of “We will rock you” with full audience participation. We even had a fabulous staff pop group, “Steps Club 7”, with teachers showing off some of their hidden talents!
Miss Wood, Head of Music, said:
'It was wonderful... Our students went above and beyond, supporting each other in rehearsals and encouraging others to share their talents. As well as organising their own performances, many students (and staff) showed dedication and great collaborative skills to perform in our ensembles.”
The Music Department are already planning ahead to next year’s show which they hope will be bigger and better than ever! 🤩
