Flame fired pottery. A quick mini cup I made recently during one of my Weekend in the Woods courses. It was fired at a low temperature, simply in an open campfire.

The amazing hairline patterns are from hair laid on the cup when red hot, before plunging into water. The bright colours are from the fire - (the clay is a plain grey colour before firing).

The shine is from burnishing with a pebble before firing. I then coated it in beeswax after firing.

I've just had such a great few days with and

Thank you for coming to the woods! I had an incredible time! We cooked delicious food on the fire, foraged wild mushrooms, drank elderflower champagne, made and fired pottery, baked bread, weaved willow and swam in the River Teign. Amazing what you can fit in a long weekend with a keen group of excellent humans.

Bookings available in September and October. Mushroom season is upon us!...

Paleo bow drill fire - no modern tools. String from nettle fibres, limpet/oyster shell bearing block, willow hearth and spindle.

This was my first paleo bow drill success a few years ago - just stumbled upon the video this morning! I was very excited to finally get it without relying on modern string.

Foragers must be experimenters!

Hogweed and primrose leaf finely chopped and cooked in butter with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Served on sourdough crumpets, drizzled with local honey and decorated with candied primrose flowers.

This was absolutely delicious. The unique aromatic spice flavour of hogweed is well complimented by the cinnamon and nutmeg in a sweet dish. The primrose leaf has a mellow, almost sweetness to it in my opinion - the sugar and butter definitely brings this flavour out further.

Dirty Dandelion Chai Latte

I've always loved a dirty chai latte, and so thought the other day, why not swap out the coffee shot for a shot of dandelion coffee?...
The result: absolutely delicious! I will definitely be making these regularly from now on.

If you want to try this, dig up and clean a dandelion root or two, coarsely chop and roast in the oven at 150-200 degrees for up to 30 mins. Next, blend root into a powder.

Warm up milk with cardamon, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and sugar for 15 minutes, then strain.

Pour a shot of boiling water over a teaspoon or two of dandelion root powder, leave for 2-3 mins then strain.

Mix the milk and the dandelion coffee together. Done.

Sailing my classic Heron dinghy at Stoke Gabriel, on the River Dart.
She's probably about 60 years old, still with the original sails! Sail number 956 - about 10,000 were built.
She creaks and groans with every gust, and I must set to the bilge pump every 20 minutes or so - but it is always a joy to be out on the water in the winter, with the seals, the cormorants and the swans.
