and building awareness about voice health, especially for those with voice disorders.

I’ve always been a great believer in not pigeon holing myself and having a diverse career and this week has been a prime example
🎶Singing lessons - teaching adults and children
🎤Musical theatre karaoke hosting- this has been a new venture which is proving really popular and I love it ( a million years ago when I was a Pontins Bluecoat I used to have to host karaoke sessions but this takes it to another level)
☀️Care Home performance - for the last few years I have been singing at local care homes and although the audiences are less grand they are no less discerning and I enjoy the process of putting together a set list that stirs memories and brings joy to the residents.
🎙️Rehearsing for a gig coming up. I am singing 2 sets of post modern jukebox songs and I am having great fun discovering new songs.

All these different things allow me to use my voice in many different ways and share my love of performing and teaching. Vocal health and stamina is always something I am aware of but thankfully I have been doing this for long enough to know my voice well and how much I can do - that comes with experience but get to know your voice and cherish your gift!

One of the biggest misunderstandings in singing is that airflow and pressure are the same thing.

They are not.

You can have a pressurized system without flooding the voice with airflow, and that distinction matters a lot.

If too much air is allowed to rush up under the vocal folds, the voice will usually react in one of two ways: either the folds will squeeze to resist it, or they will part and the sound will go breathy.

That is why “more air” is very often not the answer.

Higher notes do usually require more energization, but that is not the same thing as sending a bigger quantity of air through the voice. It is more accurate to think in terms of stable pressure and controlled release, not dumping air upward and hoping the voice can manage it.

That is also why support is not simply about pushing, pulling, or holding harder. In the long run, support is really about learning how to hold off the push from underneath so the folds are not constantly reacting to unregulated airflow.

That takes time to understand, because support is one of those things that is both very simple and very complicated.

But if your whole approach to singing is built on “more air,” eventually the voice will let you know.
