***Place Value***

Having a secure understanding of place value is vital for children. It is important that children understand that while a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number.

In this activity the child demonstrated they were able to recognise a number in words, numerals and pictorially. He was able to tell me how many tens and ones were in each number. The next step will be to introduce hundreds, tens and ones.

*** Treat box***

The children work very hard in their sessions with me, hard work is rewarded with stickers at the end of each session, once our sticker page is full it is time to dip the treat box. The children get very excited when they start to get towards the end of their sticker sheet, they count down each week how many they need and they really look forward to their turn in the box.

***Brain Breaks***

When learning multiple things in an hours session it is important to allow the child to have brain breaks.
Brain breaks do not need to be long breaks, educational or even a game, they are just quick structured breaks using physical movement, mindfulness exercises or sensory activities.
We might dance around the kitchen to music, chat about something that interests the student, play with one of the multiple poppets we have or we might play a short game.
We sometimes end a session with a game if I feel the student has crammed a lot of learning into one session and I feel they will become overloaded if we start something new, sometimes we have 5 minutes left at the end of a session because the student has worked quickly and I don't want to start a new topic and rush it. The children absolutely love beating me at these games.
I really do have a competitive bunch!

*** 6 times tables***

This student is practising their 6 times tables using one of my sewing dream catcher wheels.
Not only is the student practising their 6 times tables, they are practising their fine motor and sewing skills too.

I have sewing wheels available for each of the times tables, at some point all of the children at Brilliant Minds will complete at least one.

***Spellings***

All of the children that come to Brilliant Minds are assessed on their spellings/spelling rule knowledge. We then spend 5-10 mins each week securing those gaps in knowledge.

Learning spellings can be incredibly boring - If a child is bored they won't learn or retain.

I always mix up our spelling practice sessions with something a little more hands on and interactive. It really does work!
