Where Every Child is a Gifted Child 🩷 Carla's Classroom is a bespoke online tutoring company, KS1-KS4 aged children and their parents, delivered by 1-2-1 teaching, tailormade resources, games and workbooks, so pupils acquire a love of lifelong learning to reach their potential. Experienced in a range of needs from SEND to 11 plus (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal, Critical Thinking, Exam Preparation, Interview Practice plus Scholarship Advice). General catch up work: Our aim at Carla's Classroom is to educate and introduce children to different learning styles that suit them. It is very easy to get lost in a classroom when one teacher is trying to meet the needs of all abilities; often children cannot process instructions. Time restraints mean it can be explained to them in a maximum of two different methods before they give up, but the joy of having a 1-2-1 tutor is we can keep going up with method 5 or 6 until we find what works for your child. These different skill sets will benefit them through their school journey and facilitate and support seamless learning between home and school. We pride ourselves on product and curriculum knowledge and hope to eradicate any weaknesses and difficulties they experience in a fun manner, to become confident, well-rounded pupils. KS3-KS4 Support: Year 6 to Year 7 can be a huge leap for children and they may arrive at their secondary school with gaps in their knowledge. A lack of confidence can severely hinder progress. So many children believe they are bad at maths or don't know how to structure an essay or creative writing. We believe no child is bad at any subject; they just haven't been taught the correct way for their learning style. We can support in just English or maths, or a combination of both. Eleven Plus & Scholarship Tuition: At Carla’s Classroom we are extremely experienced in prepping for the 11 plus exam entries, here and abroad. We notoriously gain numerous bursary and scholarship awards, each year. We specialise in Maths, English, VR, NVR, Critical Thinking, Exam and Interview Preparation. We teach based on the schools your child is working towards. We are happy to advise on the whole process should it be new to you; it can be quite daunting especially if you are not used to the English school choices. The grammar and private exams are quite different and need to be taught in a different manner. Please do not think it is ever too early to have a conversation – so many people have started portfolios etc too late or have been told the wrong information. It is achievable with our advice, hard work and homework (sorry and I mention it now as it's avoidable 😀 ). This year’s offers included:

No school is off-limits and we regularly pass many more in areas such as Reading, Birmingham, Oxford, Norwich; nowhere is out of bounds with online teaching; we will research your school choices. Parent Consultations: We are happy also at Carla's Classroom to work with the parents. We fully understand that a lot has changed since we have been at school. We have all been there when your child says "Can you help with Fronted Adverbials?" Subordinate clauses? You may want to sit down and help your child, but just can't. You may hear, "Well, that's not how my teacher does it!" With so many new methodologies, we are here to help. Make homework time easier. A few lessons, teaching you the basics on why and how things are taught will really help. We also assist with understanding Educational Psychology reports or helping emails to and from school. If you have a child with SEND needs, you will have experienced how the government budget cuts will be affecting access to resources and help in the classroom. Having a number of children with SEND needs and anxiety, we understand how lonely it can be; sometimes the schools' responses aren't always satisfactory. We are happy to advise and help with report writing in these matters. SEND Teaching: We specialise in Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia, ADHD, ASD, PDA, SPD and Visual Stress. Many parents worry that their children will struggle with online learning but children are more at ease with technology than we are. All of our lessons and software are tailored to help them succeed and have fun. We have many school refusers and we are here to help your child learn, plus we will support you in getting the help you need. We can write reports to your school, put you in touch with your council's SEND department, or provide Educational Psychologists to assess your children.

The best teaching memories! A much younger me with one of my pupils. Does anyone recognise him? 🤔 You may be lucky enough to have him as your tutor now 🥰🥰 How lucky am I that I’m still blessed to know my pupils from year 3 through to university! And no, I didn’t teach them the whole time - they didn’t need me 😂😂 I loved this little school at the end of the lane. Very special memories and relationships. I absolutely love our Win of the Weeks, because that’s why I set up the company- to make a difference. There is nothing better than receiving a message from one of your tutors because they are so genuinely happy to see the results translate into the school work. I love it when they want to share the wins with me because it keeps me so connected to the pupil’s progress. Well done Aahana; we are so proud of your achievement 🎉🎉🥳🥳

I have pupils who left years ago who still phone and let me know their results of their exams because they know that the tutoring they received played a big part in the successes they gained later. I even have ex pupils that now work for me- now that really is a full circle moment and a win that should be celebrated 🥰🥰

Did you know that although our word of the week 'myriad' is often used as an adjective, it also serves as a noun? For example, 'a myriad of stars'.

In your letter, article or creative writing you could say:

'Chris was confused by the myriad of possibilities for dinner.'

However, this phrase is cliche - how can we upskill our vocabulary and make our sentence ambitious? We would teach another option:

'Overcome with a myriad of options, Chris was befuddled and chose the octopus and jellied eel pasta.'

The construction of this sentence tells us how the character is feeling and gives us the opportunity to add some humour and an ambitious synonym for confused: befuddled!

For National Poetry Day, October 1st this year, the theme was 'wonder'.

Our literacy specialist Lauren, loves hiking in the Lake District, a place where famous English poet William Wordsworth, wrote many wonderful poems.

GCSE students still study his work in their Power and Conflict Anthology - showing the true longevity and value of poetry.

A little note from Lauren:

When I was atop one of the Wainwrights fells this weekend, I thought back to Wordsworth well known line:

'For so it seemed, with purpose of its own
And measured motion like a living thing,
Strode after me.'

Although I loved my role as a classroom teacher, I absolutely love tutoring, mentoring and working in SEND. When children are struggling, I think it’s really important to show up authentically and let them know who you are. Building relationships is really important. I want them to know they are safe and loved.

So I chose to spend my Saturday morning with my mentee as he’s now back in school full time and smashing it 🎉🎉 And because he’s part of the family, my husband came too (fully enhanced DBS checked and insured before anyone asks!) It’s hard to believe I used to be the tall one 😱 He always greets me at the door with a coffee and today he bought me flowers with his pocket money too 🥰🥰 I’m so privileged and blessed that I get to spend time with children like this. There is nothing better than seeing your children flourish 🩷🧡🩷

We are having some great wins at Carla’s Consultancy currently. Although the local authorities are trying to scupper EHCPs and children’s education, I’ve been blessed to work with some good case workers and it makes all the difference. I really do believe that many of them want to help but their hands are tied from their management team above. It astounds me how much knowledge parents now have- you all become SEND specialists out of necessity!

So what’s my role? Often, I’m used at the last hurdle, to get things over the line when you’ve run out of steam. I can attend school meetings, support Sencos, redraft the EHCP, recommend schools, attend mediation, create EOTAS packages, support with complaints and attend meetings such as CIN and MDT. My background is teaching and school governance, so I understand why schools simply can’t deliver some things in the EHCP, or what they should be doing.

The world of SEND is very difficult right now. There is no money and the local authorities are already hiding behind the proposed reforms, even though they are not in effect yet. It’s a scary time for our kids. But the law is the law. And until it is changed, they can’t really argue with it. Gosh, they will try, but you follow protocols and you’ll get there. In the last two weeks, I’ve had two separate LAs stating they are keeping children at mainstream, even though the profession team around them stated specialist was needed. Both times, they conceded and will now consult specialist schools 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Fighting the local authorities can be very challenging. You’re up against madness such as them not recognising PDA as a diagnosis, even though they have PDA specialists schools in their borough 🤦🏽‍♀️ Make that make sense 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️
But it can be extremely rewarding when you see children returning to school, or getting the right school; even small wins like uniform allowances can make a huge difference to a child’s life 😊

Our bonus Word of the Week 'pristine', serves as an ambitious adjective in creative writing.

Usually pristine will describe the condition of something like a room or clothing - but we can dig deeper ☺️

How about applying pristine to the condition of a character's thoughts or intentions? 🧐

Avoid cliches like 'pristine heart'- use pristine countenance instead 🙂 It’s a great word to use to create a juxtaposition within your writing:

“She stood before him, pristine and poised, her immaculate white dress untouched by the chaos around her.”

“Despite the ravaged dust-choked battlefield around him, the soldier remained strangely pristine, his uniform spotless. His pallid skin unblemished.”

We enjoy teaching our students figurative language as part of their creative writing lessons (vital for eleven plus exam success! 🎉

Remember that including onomatopoeia will give your reader audio cues and enable them to really step into the realm of your story.

Imagine hearing the 'clang' of a dull, metal key, the collective 'creak' of an ancient wood and of course, many more examples that we teach, here at Carla's Classroom. How about combining it with assonance – words contain the same/similar vowel sounds- for extra exam marks: grunt and clunk being a great example. Or use clunk and thunk for the triple threat: alliteration, onomatopoeia and assonance 😱😱

We tend to think of onomatopoeia as something that’s just taught at primary level. But at Carla’s Classroom, our vocabulary lists develop GCSE vocabulary skills also. Lauren, our Literacy Lead has chosen some wonderful onomatopoeic words for our pupils to learn including susurrus, sough and ululation. Do you remember what they mean and can you use them to create vivid imagery in your writing? 🧐

So, remember if you get a question about onomatopoeia, you are looking for sound. ☺️🩷

Today I’m celebrating 25 years of being Isabella Rose’s mummy, which is the most important job I have. Anyone who has her as a tutor, PA or mentor, or perhaps she offers respite to your family, you’ll know she’s an incredible young woman who truly cares about children. I’m very blessed to witness her grow in her career in her own right in the world of education and she’s already made a difference to so many children’s and family’s lives. We are so proud of her, and I’m truly blessed that she works for Carla’s Classroom whilst studying at UCL. She’s currently in a lecture hall now studying Society, Education and Culture- very exciting 😂 Happy birthday darling 🥳🥳🎉🎉
