A final call for anyone interested in joining this September's practitioner training.

The in-person course is planned to start in Castleford on 26th September, so if you've been considering it but haven't yet got in touch, this really is the time to do it.

You can download the prospectus to see exactly what's involved, or contact me if you have questions before deciding whether to apply.

After this week, I'll be turning my attention to other training, CPD and supervision, so this is my last planned reminder about the September intake.

I rather like looking at where familiar words came from.

Did you know that resilience has its roots in the Latin resilire, meaning to spring or leap back?
Somewhere along the way, resilience has sometimes come to mean being strong enough not to be affected by difficult things. But that's not really what the word suggests at all.
Something has to be moved before it can spring back.
We can be upset, knocked off course or need time to recover and still be resilient. Perhaps resilience isn't about standing completely still while life happens around us. It's about finding our way back afterwards.

The latest YHT News is out on Thursday, September 3rd: Hypnotic Inductions, Simple GDPR Compliance & "Push the Button"!

This month, I’m looking at why having a choice of hypnotic inductions matters, some practical help with your privacy policies, and why we shouldn't always act on the thoughts that pop into our heads.

There’s also the usual mix of research, tips, and resources for hypnotherapists and students.

Some courses only come around once a year.

This is one of them.

On 20th September, Brian Turner of Phoenix Therapy and I will be running our annual Advanced Anxiety Management course in Castleford.

It's designed for qualified hypnotherapists who would like to deepen their understanding of more complex anxiety presentations.

We'll be looking at practical ways of working with issues such as:

• health anxiety
• panic
• trauma-related anxiety
• more complex presentations
• choosing the most appropriate approach for the individual client

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching qualified therapists is that everyone brings different experiences into the room, and we all learn from the discussion.

If you'd like to take your anxiety work a little further, we'd love to see you there.

One of the nicest things about this profession is that none of us ever stops learning.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of Brian Turner's Lessons Learned in the Therapy Business, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's an honest, entertaining and very personal look at life as a therapist, full of practical advice drawn from real experience. Whether you're just starting or have been in practice for years, there's plenty to make you smile, think and occasionally nod in recognition.
When it was first published, this is how I described it:

"An entertaining, informative and personal response to working as a therapist. Lots of good advice here for established therapists and those new to or just entering the field."

If you're looking for something to add to your professional reading list over the summer, I'd happily recommend it.

Five things nobody told me before I became a hypnotherapist...

1️⃣ You never stop learning.

2️⃣ You start noticing the language people use in everyday conversations.

3️⃣ You end up with far more books than shelf space. (These are just a few of mine. I have many other bookcases!)

4️⃣ You realise there are usually several different ways to help the same client.

5️⃣ The most valuable skill isn't knowing lots of techniques. It's learning how to think.

That last one is probably the biggest lesson of all.
And it's one of the main reasons I teach a range of evidence-informed approaches, rather than focusing on just one.

One of the questions I'm often asked is, "Will I actually feel ready to see clients?"

It's a very sensible question. After all, no one wants to qualify feeling like they still don't know what they're doing.

One of my favourite comments from a former student says it better than I ever could:

"I trained with YHT and Debbie, the Lead Trainer, a decade ago and am so glad I chose them. The quality and expertise are five-star plus, and you graduate really feeling ready and skilled to see clients and help them on their journeys."

My aim isn't simply to help students pass assessments. It's to help them develop the confidence, judgement, and practical skills they'll need when a real client sits down in front of them.

Applications for September are still open. More information and the application form are at www.yorkshirehypnotherapytraining.co.uk

"Imagine you're walking along a beach..."

I have aphantasia, which means I don't form mental pictures. It's something I've lived with all my life, and it's also become a fascinating area of research.
The good news is that those with aphantasia can still respond extremely well to imagination. We may simply experience suggestions differently.

It's a subject I'm always happy to talk about for peer support groups, supervision groups, and training organisations, combining personal experience with the latest research.

And there's a chapter in The Hypnotherapist's Companion that grew out of exactly that interest. Helping therapists adapt their language so it works for the person in front of them, rather than assuming everyone experiences the world in the same way.

Which hypnotic induction should you use?

It's one of the first questions my students ask, and the answer is probably not the one they're expecting!
In the first module of my hypnotherapy course, students learn three different inductions. Not because I expect them to use all three every time, but because one of the first things they discover when they go home to practise is that not every induction suits every client.
In my latest article, I look at the main types of hypnotic induction, when they work well, when they might not, and why experienced therapists spend less time asking "Which induction is best?" and more time asking "What's right for this client?"

Whether you're a student, newly qualified, or have been practising for years, I hope you'll find something useful.

And I'd love to know... do you have a favourite induction, or does it always depend on the client?
