If your dog has started to rush at the door, I would recommend you get a letterbox guard that goes over the letterbox and catches the post as it arrives, so that there’s no chance of the postman getting his fingers caught as he pushes larger letters through, and regardless, start teaching your dog to come to you when the postman turns up, rather than barking at the window or running to the front door.

Dogs, like every other predator on the planet, are only interested in ‘the chase’ once something has gone past them and is moving in a direction away from them.

When something is running at them or towards them, they don’t know if they are the ‘prey’, however, when that animal has passed, and bear in mind that we are animals too, then the predatory instinct comes to the fore and the instinct to chase kicks in.

Do everyone a favour, including your puppy, and teach a solid sit-stay around moving objects and animals, and if you do come across horses or cows in a paddock, don’t take your puppy over to say hello, as you could end up teaching him that when he sees them off lead he’s supposed to run over and say hello… and then mayhem will ensue.

Having a puppy, and then a dog, that can’t switch off and settle down is so stressful, not just for you but for your puppy too; and if you have wooden or laminate flooring it will drive you mad… all that click click click of their claws pacing back and forwards or, as Spud used to when we first got him, round and round the rug.

Pacing dogs can fatigue their adrenal system because the dog is constantly on the go, thereby burning energy and potentially losing condition and lean muscle, plus, they never mentally switch off which means their body can’t rest and rejuvenate.

In the same way that parents of young children insist on mid-morning and afternoon naps, so too do we need to teach our puppies to lie down on command and ‘be still’.

I give you Canis Lupus Familiaris... aka THE DOG.

Nope, not a fur-baby but an opportunistic social predator in all of it's glory, chewing on a bone just as nature intended 🐾

From birth to death, our dogs go through different stages of development, physically, physiologically and psychologically.

As they transition and develop, each stage brings with it a different set of challenges, both for our dogs and for us.

However, that doesn't mean that we use these stages as an excuse not to train our dogs, or a reason not to insist on good behaviour... after all, if we don't put the effort in to training our dog who will?

Regardless of age and stage, expect good behaviour - if your dog isn't doing what you're asking him to do then you must look to yourself to do something about it and set aside some time to put it right.
