🌟 WE’VE MADE IT TO THE FINALS! 🌟

I’m absolutely over the moon to share that Katie Hugill Childminding Carlisle - Ofsted rated GOOD has made it through to the finals of the Cumbria Baby & Children’s Awards 2027! 🥰🏆🎉

I honestly can’t thank everyone enough for all the support, nominations, kind words and encouragement that have got us this far. ❤️

Being a lone childminder, running my own little business, it means more than you could ever know to have such an amazing amount of support behind me. It really does make all the hard work worthwhile. 🥹❤️

If you’ve supported us so far, please keep your fingers crossed, keep an eye out for the voting link in the next few weeks. Every single vote will mean the absolute world to us! 🥰🤞

Let’s see if Katie Hugill Childminding can go all the way! 🏆✨

GLOOP — aka cornflour & cocoa powder = muddy fun!! 🤎

This was a kitchen door firmly shut kind of activity — keeping the mess (and creativity 😂) contained 😵‍💫🤎 Those of you who know gloop will fully understand this 🤣

The boys had SO much fun using their hands and the diggers to scoop up the gloop, and noticing that if you move it quickly enough, it stays hard 🤎 Such a simple activity, but they were fascinated!

The baby, on the other hand, had a completely different agenda… her favourite part was getting as far away from the gloop as possible,

Using her newly learned walking skills to get far away 🤣

Next time I’ll reverse psychology it though, because she’s actually sentenced to the high chair until mealtimes are cleaned away — purely because she LOVES playing in the mess 👀😂

Messy, chaotic, sensory fun… basically everything they love! 🤎

🎥 Please ignore my very camera-shy voice! 😆🥹

There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good story together… 📚🥰

We’re big Gruffalo fans here at Katie’s, so when we spotted Gruffalo Granny, we just had to add it to our book collection! 🐻💚

Today we’ve been enjoying it together and, as you can see, they were completely engrossed! 🥹📖 I love seeing them notice all the little familiar characters from Julia Donaldson’s other stories too — so many exciting things to spot! 👀✨

Books like this are such a lovely way to encourage imagination, language, listening and a love of stories… all while having lots of fun together. 💕

Have you read Gruffalo Granny yet? What did you think? 🥰👇

🎄 Looking for Christmas gift ideas? 🎁

I honestly can’t recommend the Toniebox enough! 🥰 It’s one of our most-used resources and something the children come back to again and again.

It’s on all day, every day 🤣 and every age seems to love it! Whether they’re listening independently, enjoying a story together or singing along to their favourite songs, it provides such a lovely opportunity for children to enjoy stories and music in their own way. ❤️

We have lots of different Tonies to choose from, and we share our collection with Katie’s sister, which means we’re always swapping and discovering new favourites 😊

On Friday we did our 3-monthly Tonie swap 🤣🔄 and, as you can imagine, they were very excited to see which characters had arrived!

And already this morning… it’s been used! 😂🥰

Definitely one of those resources I’d say is worth the investment and makes a lovely Christmas present — especially for children who love stories, music and imaginative play. 🎶📚❤️

First week of October already 🧡 Where is the time going? 🥹🍂

We’ve had a little move around over the weekend, making some changes to our environment and enhancing the areas the children have been showing a real interest in recently 😊

It’s so lovely to watch their interests develop and then use these to inspire our continuous provision and create meaningful opportunities for learning through play. 🥰

📕 Story time has been a big favourite!
We love reading books together, and afterwards we enjoy retelling the stories to one another, following the sequence of events and remembering what happened.
It’s a wonderful way to support communication and language, listening, confidence and an understanding of story structure — all while having lots of fun! ❤️

We’ve also spotted a couple of lovely resources in the Aldi UK and Lidl GB toy events this week 👀😊 We’re hoping to grab a few, as I think they’re going to be a big hit with the children! 😆

There’s nothing better than seeing children so engaged in something they’re genuinely interested in and then watching that interest grow into new learning opportunities 🧡✨

What have your little ones been particularly interested in recently? 👇🥰

Following on from my last post, I’ve seen a few comments saying they introduce these books from around age 2 — but in my setting, they’re available from as young as 7 months 👶🏼📖

Although our youngest children may not yet be able to independently select their own book, they can certainly show an interest in it — and that’s where we follow their lead. ❤️

We have lots of our resources easily accessible, and through encouragement, modelling and support, our younger children quickly begin to learn how resources can be used safely and appropriately.

As you can see, one of our babies is completely engrossed! 🥰 She has been back and forth to her book throughout the week, exploring the materials, making marks and showing a real interest in the experience. Our older children even help find the books for them 🤗

The EYFS encourages children to have regular opportunities to explore a wide range of media and materials, and Development Matters highlights the importance of providing resources that children can access freely and opportunities for babies and toddlers to explore and make marks. 🎨✨

For me, it’s not about expecting a 7-month-old to sit and “make a picture” — it’s about giving them the time, space and opportunity to explore, follow their interests and develop their independence at their own pace. 💕
