From dancing with us here at Cumbria Ballet School to dancing on P&O cruises…

It’s been lovely to have Erin back in the studio with us!

Erin is home between contracts and joining us for a few weeks before heading back to sea, which means she’s been able to take a class with her younger sister Scarlett, who also dances with us 👯‍♀️

Despite both learning to dance here, they’ve never taken class together until now!

Rachel taught them both from when they were younger, so having the sisters in the same class has made Erin’s visit extra special.

There’s a real family feel here at Cumbria Ballet School, and we love that former pupils still come back to join us when they can 🩵🩰

Behind every brilliant dancer is a teacher who’s said “from the top” more times than they can count 😂

To mark World Teachers’ Day, we wanted to celebrate the teachers who get to know their dancers, understand when they need reassurance and know when they’re ready to be pushed that little bit further. They put so much into helping each pupil progress, so today we’d love them to know just how much they are appreciated!

There are also a few people we’d love to give a special mention to…

First, Rachel’s mum Barbara, who taught her to dance and ran the school before Rachel took over. Thank you for sharing your love of ballet with Rachel and so many pupils over the years 🫶

Then to the fantastic Laura! We love having her in the studio on a Monday teaching contemporary classes and giving our dancers more ways to express themselves through dance.

And of course, Rachel herself.

Alongside teaching, she’s welcoming new faces, planning classes and dealing with everything that goes on behind the scenes. Rachel, thank you for the time and care you put into the school and for helping dancers of all ages feel welcome 🩵

Rachel also wanted to give a big shoutout to her teaching friends from her teaching days and those running their own dance schools – so much care and hard work goes into what you do, and you deserve a big thank you today too 👏

Ballet or Cumbria Dance Creatives?

We started Cumbria Dance Creatives at the beginning of September and our new starters are loving it so far! Ballet is still as popular as ever too and we’d love to welcome some new faces to both classes 🩵

We recently had some teenagers come into the studio who’d never tried ballet before, and Rachel loved chatting to them about the school and what classes are like here 🩰

We’ve also had lots of adults starting ballet for the very first time which has been amazing to see! The dancers in these photos are some of our students from our summer show and it’s lovely to think how far they’ve come since they first joined us.

We know that coming to a new class can feel nerve-racking and you might be wondering where to go, what to wear, or whether everyone else will have been dancing for years, but please don’t let that put you off.

You can always come and meet Rachel and have a look around the studio first, just like our recent visitors did.

There are people of all ages finding their feet here and we promise everyone is so welcoming!

Sometimes it’s learning a brand new step or moving up to the next grade, but often it’s the smaller improvements that show how far a dancer has come. It might be:

Holding a balance for a little longer than you did last week
Remembering a correction without being reminded
Picking up choreography more quickly
Finding the confidence to dance without checking what everyone else is doing
Or finally understanding something that has taken weeks to click 🩰

Strong technique takes time and consistency, and our teachers pay close attention in every class so each pupil understands what to work on next.

We’ll always be there to encourage you, push you that little bit further and help you keep developing your love of ballet 🙌

Some children are ready and excited to begin ballet from a young age, while others need a little more time before they feel comfortable joining a class - there really isn’t a perfect age to start!

Our Pre-School Ballet class welcomes children from age three and introduces them to dance through music, stories and movement. If your child is older when they decide they’d like to try ballet, that’s absolutely fine too.

We have classes for children of different ages and stages, and they’re always welcome to visit the studio and meet Rachel beforehand if it would make that first class feel a little easier.

We want them to feel part of the class and excited to come back each week 🩵

If your little one isn’t three yet, you can add them to our waiting list through our website, and we’ll be in touch when they’re old enough to join us…

Some of our adult dancers walked into their first class having never danced a step.

They had no ballet background and no idea what half the terminology meant, but they gave it a go and we’ve since watched them find a love for dancing they never knew they had 🫶

There’s such a lovely community within our adult classes too and everyone comes with different experiences and abilities, but they’re all there for the same reason…

To dance, learn something new and enjoy an hour doing something just for themselves 🩰

With ballet classes available for different levels and our new adult contemporary class in full swing, there are now even more ways to bring dance into your week!

So please remember that you don’t need to be a professional, you can begin right now, exactly as you are! And you might be surprised by how quickly you fall in love with it.

What a brilliant first session we had with our new Cumbria Dance Creatives class🥳

Laura loved welcoming everyone into the studio for 45 minutes of movement, music, imagination and as you can see by the photos, lots of fun!

The children explored different expressions, tested their balance and got creative with their movements which is exactly what this class is all about. We want to give your child the freedom to express themselves through dance without worrying about getting every step “right” and help them build confidence while enjoying themselves along the way…

Cumbria Dance Creatives is open to boys and girls aged 5+ and takes place every Monday from 4:15 - 5:00pm.
