Our Year 8 boys football team were back in action on Monday as they played Appleby in the Small Schools County Cup.

The boys found themselves 2-0 down at half time, but came out after half time with an attitude to turn the game around. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were on the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat in a closely competitive match.

The boys never stopped trying and showed the togetherness of a team right until the final whistle.

Well done to Murray M and Leighton D for your goals!

Wednesday was another action-packed day for the Forest School's group! The group focused on building positive relationships and developing communication skills through team challenges, mind games and clue-hunting activities, working together to find the right outcomes.

There was plenty of practical learning too, including safely setting and lighting the fire pit, cooking burritos, toasting marshmallows and cutting wood for kindling. The hot chocolate was of course, a big hit!

For those who fancied some quieter time, the hammocks provided the perfect spot to relax, chat with friends or even enjoy a little snooze.

Pupils also got creative with target games, making their own using materials from the natural environment. They explored how natural ingredients can be used to create dyes, along with cardboard to make their targets.

Thursday saw the group getting creative again as they made environmentally friendly bird feeders using cardboard tubes, peanut butter, bird seed, dowel and string.

Once the feeders were ready, we headed to Hammond’s Pond, litter pickers in hand, to help look after and improve our local environment. The Pupils worked together to collect litter before enjoying a well-earned break in the park.

We then headed to the outdoor gym, which is quickly becoming a firm favourite, before placing the bird feeders in the nearby trees.
We’re looking forward to checking on them — hopefully the feeders will be empty and our feathered friends will have enjoyed their extra snacks!

What a fantastic couple of days filled with teamwork, creativity, practical skills, outdoor learning and plenty of fun!

Our 4th Week at Our Favourite Place – Susan's Farm CIO!

Our Farm Lead, Caren, took us all to Wallace Field Farm for another wonderful day of exploring, learning and enjoying the great outdoors.

We started our adventure by spending some time with the farm horse, Kojack. Our pupils have been working so hard on overcoming their fear of being around horses, and it has been amazing to see their confidence grow. They all managed so well and worked brilliantly together as a team.

We then headed off to explore the forest and woodland, making our way all the way down towards the river. Along the way, our pupils had some important farm jobs to complete, including checking that all the water containers had enough water for the cows and sheep.

When we reached the river, our pupils decided to take a well-deserved quiet moment. They all sat together near the water, listening to the beautiful sound of the river flowing and taking in the peaceful surroundings. It was such a lovely few moments of calm and connection with nature.

Some of our pupils were keen to continue exploring, and we discovered some great spots where they could safely enjoy throwing rocks into the river. Everyone had the opportunity to explore, have fun and enjoy the natural environment around them.

After all our adventures, we headed back to the farm, where everyone enjoyed some hot chocolate and cake — the perfect way to finish a fantastic afternoon!

The sunshine was an added bonus and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Another wonderful day filled with teamwork, confidence-building, exploration, laughter, nature and lots of happy memories.

Dodgeball at the Cumbria Active Games!

Recently, a team of our pupils had the opportunity to take part in the Dodgeball competition at the Cumbria Active Games County Festival, held across Bitts Park, The Sheepmount and the Sands Centre.

The opening game was closely contested, with both teams quickly settling into the competition. As the games progressed, our pupils grew in confidence, developed their understanding of the rules and, most importantly, worked brilliantly together as a team.

The weather certainly kept everyone on their toes, with some huge downpours throughout the day! Thankfully, they passed quickly and did nothing to dampen the team's spirits. In fact, our pupils embraced the competitive atmosphere and continued to thrive.

All participating pupils received a medal and even had the opportunity to grab a photo with Spirit, the Games mascot!

The event had a fantastic party atmosphere, supported by DJ Mike Zellers from BBC Radio Cumbria and two local Paralympic athletes, who shared positive and motivational messages encouraging everyone to get involved, challenge themselves and achieve through sport.

A huge thank you to the Cumbria Active Games organisers and volunteers for creating such an enjoyable event and for continuing to provide these fantastic sporting opportunities for our young people.

Finally, a big well done and thank you to all the pupils who represented our school throughout the 2025/26 academic year. We are incredibly proud of you!

Revision That Works – Video 1: Revision Planning

We’re launching a new series of short videos to help pupils, parents and carers understand what effective revision looks like and how to make learning stick.

The series is aimed mainly at Year 11 and Year 13, but the strategies will be useful for any pupils preparing for assessments or revising key pieces of work.

In our first video, we look at revision planning - how to move away from vague plans like “revise Science” and instead create short, specific and manageable tasks that are much more likely to get done.

Challenge: Create your own two-week revision plan and bring it to Mr Cookson. Prizes will be awarded for some of the best plans over the coming weeks!

This is just the start - future videos will cover flashcards, mind maps, GCSEPod, exam questions and other practical revision techniques.

On Monday we took all of Year 9 through to Talkin Tarn as part of an enrichment trip for SALAD day. We were once again very fortunate to have some lovely September weather and the pupils completed some orienteering choosing different levels of challenge to navigate their way round the site to find different controls.

The pupils worked collaboratively using speaking and listening skills to identify physical features shown on the map and precisely locate each control. It was a pleasant morning for both pupils and staff with the pupils being excellent ambassadors of the school.

Yesterday, we welcomed Year 5 pupils from St Margaret Mary RC Primary School, St Cuthbert’s RC Primary School and St Bede’s RC Primary School for a fantastic morning of workshops.

The pupils took part in hands on activities in Art, Music and Geography and had a wonderful time learning, creating and exploring these subjects throughout the morning.

A huge thank you to our Year 8 Pupil Ambassadors, who supported our visiting primary schools and helped make the morning such a success. We are incredibly proud of them.

Well done to all our pupils who took part in Friday morning’s Year 7 Homework Spotlight! We saw some fantastic homework, and it was wonderful to see so much effort and pride in their work.

Alongside celebrating our pupils’ wonderful homework, we invited them to design a Homework Spotlight sign for us to use every Friday morning. We were delighted to receive some fantastic designs, and we encourage pupils to continue bringing their designs to the Sports Hall next Friday before Form Time for a chance to receive a treat!

We can’t wait to see all the wonderful ideas our pupils come up with.
