WC 5th October Squirrels 🐿
This week the children will be:
💪 starting to use large and small motor skills to do things independently e.g. washing their own hands
📞 starting to understand simple instructions like 'let's wash hands'.

Staff will set up an activity where they put 'germs' onto the children's hands - these will be hundreds and thousands. Staff will talk about how germs are invisible and how we must wash our hands with soap and water to remove them. The children will be supported in giving their hands a good wash to remove the germs. Staff will talk to the children about when we wash our hands i.e. before eating, after using the toilet, when they are dirty.

At home:
Encourage your child to wash their hands at home, let them see you washing your hands.

WC 5th October Foxes 🦊
This week the children will be:
🖌 making rhythmical and repetitive sounds
🖌 exploring a range of sound makers and instruments and play them in different ways

Staff will provide a range of instruments for the children to explore, such as shakers, tambourines, xylophones etc. Staff will model how to use the instruments and how to make the sounds and encourage the children to make their own sounds. Staff will use words like 'loud' 'quiet' 'bang' 'shake' 'tap' etc. Staff will support the children to take turns with the musical instruments and dance along to the tunes.

At home:
Encourage your child to explore making sounds at home - this does not need to be actual instruments, it could be a pan and wooden spoon (get the ear plugs ready 😆).

The children will be:

🌎using all of their senses in hands on exploration of natural materials

The children will be exploring fruit & vegetables this week. Staff will provide some fruit & veg for the children to explore, staff will be there to answer any questions the children may have or prompt some questions - where do you think this apple grew? What do the tomatoes need to grow big and juicy? What does the broccoli look like to you? The children will be able try the fruit at snack time and do some observational drawings of different fruit & vegetables.

At home:
Talk about the fruit & vegetables you have at home - talk about the colour, feel, smell of the fruit & veg.

WC 28th September Ducklings 🦆
This week the children will be:
🌎 exploring natural materials , indoors and outside.
🎲 starting to develop counting like behaviour, such as making sounds, pointing or saying some numbers.

The children will hunt for leaves and conkers out in the garden. Staff will model counting the leaves and conkers, pointing to each item and saying the numbers one, two, three. Staff will talk about the colours of the leaves.

At home:
When going up and down the stairs - count each stair.

This week the children will be:
🎲 reciting numbers past 5 .
🎲 saying one number for each item in order 1,2,3,4,5.
🎲 start to show finger numbers past 5.

Staff will set up an area with baskets and objects to count. They will support the children to count objects into the baskets. Staff will play easy, simple board games using a dice where the children have to count the spots on the dice.

At home:
Talk about numbers that you see when out and about - house numbers, bus numbers.

This week the children will be:
📖 repeating words and phrases from familiar books.
📖 enjoying sharing books with an adult.
📖starting to ask questions about the book. Make comments and share their own ideas.

Staff will take the children to our nursery library. Staff will read books with the children and encourage them to join in with repeated phrases i.e. We're going on a bear hunt, Dear Zoo.

At home:
Read a bed time story at home, visit the library in town.

WC 28th September Squirrels 🐿
This week the children will be:
🖌explore different materials, using all their senses to investigate them. Manipulate and play with different materials.
🌍 explore natural materials, indoors and outside.

Staff will provide the children with the resources to paint with the conkers. The children will find the conkers outside in the garden, they will be given a small tray with paper in it. The children will put paint on the conkers and drop them into the tray. The children will then tilt, rock or shake the tray from side to side so the conkers roll across the paper. Staff will model descriptive words while the children are doing the activity.

At home:
Open up discussions about what you see and can find in the garden or at the park. Different coloured leaves, sticks, conkers etc.

This week the children will be:
🌍 repeating actions that have an effect.
🌍 exploring materials with different properties.

Staff will be providing soft fruits such as banana, strawberries, ripe pear and peach. The children will be encouraged to touch, squeeze and explore the fruit. They will investigate how the fruit changes when squashed. This will help support:
fine motor skills - grasping, squeezing, reaching.
communication and language - naming fruits, colours & textures.
sensory development - through touch, smell, sight & taste.

At home:
Make some playdough for the children to explore.
2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 to 1.5 cups boiling water

Mix the dry ingredients and oil in a bowl. Add the water into the dry ingredients, stirring continuously until the mixture combines into a thick dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead vigorously for a couple of minutes.

WC 21st September Squirrels
This week the children will be:
🌍using all their senses in hands on exploration of natural materials.
🌍talking about what they see using a wide vocabulary.

Staff will encourage the children to explore their surroundings, they will talk about what they see and hear and discuss Autumn - the leaves changing colour, leaves falling from the trees, conkers.
The children will collect leaves, conkers, twigs from outside and investigate their findings.

At home:
Go on an Autumn walk - talk about what you see.

The staff will let the children collect some 'Autumn finds' out in the garden - leaves, sticks, conkers, feathers. The children will then be able to make a picture using the items that have been collected from the garden. Staff will model language such as crunchy, crinkly, crispy, shiny.

At home:
Go for an Autumn walk, talk about what you see.
