Our Monday morning was brightened by one of our talented 3rd Years, Lucy Ruddle, sharing some stunning images captured over the summer break.

The first image shows a speckled Herring Gull chick amongst a carpet of wildflowers on a cliff top at the fantastic RSPB Bempton Cliffs reserve. Adult gulls are often viewed negatively due to coming into contact and conflict with people in urban areas as they have adapted to optimise alternative food and nesting sites.

The second image captures a fleeting moment of a beautiful Barn Swallow, taken in Dartmoor, swooping down from the sky, with its beak agape to scoop up some water on the wing.

The last image shows a young Mandarin duck, taken just a short walk from our campus in Rickerby Park. Females and youngsters of the species have more subtle plumage than that of the colourful males. A dainty smaller species of duck, they are diving and perching ducks which nest in cavities in trees close to water.

It has been great to see everyone on campus, with both new starters and returning 2nd and 3rd Years. Everyone is now settled back and used to their timetables for this Semester.

We also recognise that moving from all over the UK and internationally to study at university can be a stressful time and settling in can be a challenge for all sorts of reasons - if anyone needs more support, there is lots of help available. Check out this poster from our lovely health and wellbeing team and don't hesitate to reach out if you need a chat about anything -

The BA Wildlife Media course team love seeing student's wildlife photography, filmmaking, wildlife sightings and records. It's great to see our new starters already exploring the local area so well - getting out and about and finding the wildlife on our doorstep.

Callum Powell in 1st Year has been successful observing Kingfishers on the River Eden just over the road from campus, achieving this lovely image.
