This week we returned to Bwlch Y Geuffordd gardens, a trip I look forward to every year since we first visited 3 years ago.

It is part of the National Garden Scheme owned by a couple who have spent years imagining and creating magic in every corner of this place. You can feel with every step that it's somebody's heart and soul and you have been whisked away from the real world into a dream to go dragon spotting for a few hours.

In our imaginations and on our adventures these past few weeks the children have been searching for fairyland and it was unanimously agreed that we'd finally found it.
Yr wythnos hon fe wnaethon ni ddychwelyd i erddi Bwlch y Geuffordd, taith rydw i’n edrych ymlaen ati bob blwyddyn ers i ni ymweld â nhw am y tro cyntaf dair blynedd yn ôl.

Mae’r gerddi’n rhan o Gynllun Gerddi Cenedlaethol, ac maen nhw’n eiddo i gwpl sydd wedi treulio blynyddoedd yn dychmygu ac yn creu hud ym mhob cornel o’r lle hwn. Gallwch deimlo gyda phob cam mai calon ac enaid rhywun sydd yma, ac eich bod wedi cael eich cludo i ffwrdd o’r byd go iawn, i freuddwyd, i chwilio am ddreigiau am ychydig oriau.

Yn ein dychymyg ac ar ein hanturiaethau dros yr wythnosau diwethaf, mae’r plant wedi bod yn chwilio am wlad y tylwyth teg, ac roedd pawb yn unfrydol ein bod ni o’r diwedd wedi dod o hyd iddi.

Tuesday we visited our friends at the wonderful community fridge in Aberporth. It really is the place to be on a Tuesday morning and my big girls were so excited to finally get to see what all the fuss is about. We had the warmest welcome as always, the boys wanted to show everyone (and I mean everyone) their paw patrol toys and we did our bit for breast cancer research by buying a fair few cakes. It's a tough job but the children stepped up for a wonderful cause and it gave us the chance to talk about charity and helping others. My eldest was chuffed to bits with her new books on myths and legends and paper crafts and I look forward to every surface in my house being covered with crafting 🫣😂
Next we went on a hike from our favourite park at Penrallt garden centre down to Ceibwr beach, mainly so my little friends that love to throw, were able to throw rocks into a river uninterrupted for a good half an hour. Sometimes you just have to feed that need!!
Ddydd Mawrth aethon ni i ymweld â’n ffrindiau yn yr oergell gymunedol hyfryd yn Aberporth. Mewn gwirionedd, dyna’r lle i fod ar fore Mawrth, ac roedd fy merched mawr mor gyffrous o’r diwedd i gael gweld beth oedd yr holl ffws amdano. Cawsom y croeso cynhesaf, fel bob amser. Roedd y bechgyn eisiau dangos eu teganau Paw Patrol i bawb (ac rwy’n golygu PAWB!) ac fe wnaethon ni ein rhan dros ymchwil canser y fron drwy brynu cryn dipyn o gacennau. Mae’n waith caled, ond camodd y plant i’r adwy dros achos mor wych, a rhoddodd gyfle i ni siarad am elusen a helpu eraill. Roedd fy merch hynaf wrth ei bodd gyda’i llyfrau newydd am chwedlau a mythau a chrefftau papur, ac rwy’n edrych ymlaen at weld pob arwyneb yn fy nhŷ wedi’i orchuddio â chrefftau 🫣😂
Nesaf, aethon ni am dro o’n hoff barc yng Nghanolfan Arddio Penrallt i lawr at draeth Ceibwr, yn bennaf er mwyn i’m ffrindiau bach sy’n caru taflu pethau allu taflu cerrig i mewn i afon heb neb yn ymyrryd am hanner awr dda. Weithiau, mae’n rhaid i chi fwydo’r angen hwnnw! 😆

Planning in the moment

'why there two measuring tapes there? Measuring people?'

And this is how our morning began yesterday. A child asked a question and I responded with 'cool idea, let's run with it'. We spent an hour exploring 'measuring people' - drawing around each other with much giggling and comparing of who was most ticklish and even more giggling at what our bodies looked like when we stood up. 'look my a monster!!'
We explored how measuring tapes work and thought about who uses them then figured out who was the tallest. To finish, we used the pictures to make life sized self portraits.
None of this was pre-planned, I happened to have a measuring tape in the space because I know the children are interested in tools and measuring at the moment. Just child led curiosity directing a morning of play

A dyna sut y dechreuodd ein bore ddoe. Gofynnodd plentyn gwestiwn a fy ymateb i oedd, “Syniad cŵl, gadewch i ni fynd amdani.” Treulion ni awr yn archwilio’r syniad o ‘fesur pobl’ – tynnu llun o amgylch ein gilydd gyda llawer o chwerthin, cymharu pwy oedd fwyaf coslyd a mwy fyth o chwerthin wrth weld sut roedd ein cyrff yn edrych pan oedden ni’n sefyll. “Edrych, mae fy un i’n anghenfil!!”

Fe wnaethon ni archwilio sut mae tapiau mesur yn gweithio a meddwl am bwy sy’n eu defnyddio, ac yna darganfod pwy oedd y talaf. I orffen, defnyddion ni’r lluniau i greu hunanbortreadau maint go iawn.

Doedd dim o hyn wedi’i gynllunio ymlaen llaw. Roedd gen i dâp mesur yn y gofod ar hap, oherwydd rwy’n gwybod bod y plant wedi bod â diddordeb mewn offer a mesur ar hyn o bryd. Dim ond chwilfrydedd dan arweiniad y plant oedd yn cyfeirio ein bore o chwarae.

The end of last week......
Timbers were shivered at Llanerchaeron NT/YG and we finally returned to conquer the giant slope in the woods
We observed wasp nests in the wild (from a distance!)
Hiked around the quarry to see the diggers and found many many beetles and dragonflies
Courgette Brownies of course
Big kids took the lead on crafts...dragon puppets, pony beads and gheckos are in this summer!

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time there was a childminder, 5 children and a whippet. One day they went on an adventure to Colby Woodland Gardens.
The children started to find fairy holes and listened at each hole to see what the fairies were saying. The fairies said that there was a gateway to fairyland in the woods. So the children started searching.
They found a rope that they could climb deeper into the woods that they thought would lead them to the portal to the fairy world. It was a difficult task but they each climbed up. Eventually they came across a monument. 'This must be the entrance to fairy land' they said. The children realised that they must have shrunk down and all the trees were really just twigs.
As they walked they spotted the fairy Kings chair down in the woods and wanted to find a way to reach it. Eventually they came across the coin goblins log. The children knew they needed to take a coin from the coin goblin and return it to the fairy king in return for safe passage through the woods.
When they reached the chair they realised it was a story chair and as well as the coins they would need to tell a story so they would be watched over by the fairy people on their long journey to Amroth beach. The eldest child told the story of Idris the giant then the littlest child said he knew the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and soon (with a little help remembering the minor details) the woods rang out with cries of FEE FI FO FUM!!
When the story was finished they thanked the fairies and went on their way, they reached Amroth beach and met the giant fish that lived there but that is a story for another day
This isn't my story, I am just retelling what the children told me. The moral of this tale is, stories aren't just in books, they're in the landscape, and children are really good at finding them.

Huge diolch to Dysgwyr Bach gofal plant/ childminding for coming round to play yesterday morning. I SO enjoy seeing how different groups of children use the space, it gives it a whole lease of life, and I loved seeing your crew use every single loose part out front to upgrade the peephole shelter! It now has a kitchen, porch, fireplace, roof terrace, seating area, you name it. Beautiful work guys, please come and upgrade my stuff any time 😂

Meanwhile two of my crew built themselves a cage out of two football goals and refused to come out soooo...enveloping schema??
Diolch enfawr i Dysgwyr Bach am ddod draw i chwarae fore ddoe. Dwi'n mwynhau cymaint gweld sut mae gwahanol grwpiau o blant yn defnyddio’r gofod — mae’n rhoi bywyd newydd iddo, ac roeddwn i wrth fy modd yn gweld eich criw yn defnyddio pob un darn rhydd oedd allan y tu blaen i uwchraddio’r lloches sbecian! Mae ganddi gegin, cyntedd, lle tân, teras ar y to, ardal eistedd… popeth! Gwaith hyfryd, bois — dewch i uwchraddio fy mhethau unrhyw bryd 😂

Yn y cyfamser, adeiladodd dau o’m criw gawell iddyn nhw’u hunain allan o ddwy gôl bêl-droed a gwrthod dod allan soooo… sgema amgáu?? 😆

Our annual visit to Pembrokeshiresunflowers
I think I deserve some sort of bravery medal for giving in to the children's demands to do the 'big maze' especially when I have the internal satnav of a spoon
I always marvel at how this cohort comes alive in wide open spaces and how they use the landscape. There was something magical about watching a group ranging from very nearly 3 to 10 playing a game they'd made up on the spot, using a hut in a field, with complex rules that I couldn't fathom but they were all somehow adhering to. These are the times it's best to just butt out and observe.
It's interesting to watch them learn how to exist in a group, the older ones taking leadership roles but realising they had to adjust for the littlest and the littlest sometimes getting cross that things weren't going their way but slowly realising they needed to flow a bit for this to work.
I did not step in, if I fix it for them then I am taking away their opportunity to understand for themselves. There are times where my professional judgement tells me help is required, informed by many years of theory and experience. This time my professional judgement told me to sit my bum down and watch.
There is also something quite magical about watching children drift over from their hectic game and one by one start to paint until eventually everyone is sitting together quietly painting.
Thanks once again to Pembrokeshiresunflowers for opening up this beautiful space, we look forward to coming every year.

I recently had my Care Inspectorate Wales quality call, lots has happened since my last inspection so I had plenty to say (I talked for an hour and a half without coming up for air.....the Calls are supposed to be an hour 😬) during the call we talked about recording the voice of the child in our settings and my inspector gave a beautiful example of recording the children's voice on the patio windows with paint pens. I already record children's voices in my observations, ask them what they'd like to do each day and write down what they say in our scrapbooks as we look back over the things we've done but I LOVE the idea of their voices being so visible. The older children can record their voices for themselves and the little ones see me writing down their words for everyone to see and understand that their voices matter. Yesterday the children had SO many ideas and wishes and we really enjoyed being able to tick them all off. I think it will look really beautiful when the windows are full, then we simply take a picture, wipe it all off and start again!
