We're sure many of you have come to realise a lot can happen in your first September.

Imagine it's your 35th.

This World Teachers' Day marks 60 years since the 1966 Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, so we're checking in with someone who's been here longer than most (but not quite since 1966) and a new teacher who is still finding their way around.

Mr Edwards, is our longest-serving teacher, who joined the school in 1992.

And starting this term, we spoke to Miss Pritchard. First impressions? Any surprises? Has she stopped using Google Maps for the corridors? 📍

She's put in the training. Our ASC students have made the signs to carry her through.

Now there's just over 13 miles of Cardiff between Mrs Parry and the finish line 🪧

She's running the Cardiff Half today for Llamau, raising money to support young people and children facing homelessness in Wales.

And despite an injury, with your help, she's already raised an incredible £1,129. Thank you.

If you're out on the route today, keep an eye out for Mrs Parry and make some noise. If you're following online, we're sure she'll take the virtual encouragement too.

Well, we're over the line for September.

And our students weren't slow off the mark in month one. From student leadership to national awards, here’s what made Full Marks this month:

🎓Oxbridge applications - former Head Girl and current Trinity College, Oxford student Katie Gill spoke to our Year 12 Honours Group about how to make their applications stand out

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Criw Cymraeg - distributed our Welsh non-negotiable posters, which you’ll see in classrooms as we begin working towards the Siarter Iaith Silver Award, after achieving Bronze last year. Keep an eye out for the new Welsh frames made by Year 13 student Rose

📣 School Council - led by Hayden Watkins, the Council has set out ambitious plans to make student leadership more visible, accountable, and representative, including Town Halls, regular forums and more ways for pupils to share ideas directly

🧪 Ibrahim Saadallah - huge congratulations to our outgoing Year 13 student on being awarded the Salters’ Next Generation Chemist Award 2026, a national award supporting talented young chemists

🇪🇺 European Youth Parliament - Year 13 students Ali, Emelia, Mruthu and Jess travelled to Northumbria University with Mr Mann to represent us at the EYP UK Autumn National Session

Some pupils hang up their blazers and come back wearing a staff lanyard.

For National Teaching Assistants' Day, we're spotlighting Miss Ali, a former student who has returned to support our pupils, including Thalia.

"As a former student of LHS it is truly special to return and give back to the school community – working with young people who show remarkable resilience, passion and commitment every day."

Teaching assistants are a huge part of school life:

✏️ in lessons
🚌 on trips
♟️ at clubs
🎭 during productions
🛹 across our Enrichment Programme
🫶 when a pupil need extra support.

So today, we want to say thank you to all our teaching assistants for the patience, humour and care they bring to our school every day.

Coding is just for programmers right?

Wrong.

It teaches you how to break a problem down, test an idea, fix mistakes and keep going when the first version doesn't work.

Those skills can take you places and (digital) spaces you might not expect:

Games design. Engineering. Animation. Cyber security. Architecture. Music production.

Jobs that could open up to your child by learning to code and build digital skills.

Technology is moving quickly. There is a lot to be excited about.

We also know that keeping up with online life can feel difficult for parents and carers. New platforms, AI tools, chat communities and group messages can be hard to track, especially when your child is just starting secondary school.

That's why we've updated our guide for families.

Growing-up online builds on the Social Media Guide we published two years ago. This new version looks more widely at online safety, new technology, AI and the conversations children are having in digital spaces.

With the UK Government looking more closely at social media and under-16s, those conversations aren't going away.

Sarah Jones didn't leave school with urban planning mapped out 📐

Geography and Business Studies had given her an interest in real-world issues, but it was a bursary opportunity through Legal & General that helped open a new route.

With support from Mrs Geare, Sarah attended a programme at UCL and is now studying Urban Planning and Real Estate there.

Her advice to those of you thinking about your next move:

"Take any opportunity you can, even if it feels daunting or outside your comfort zone. You never know where something might lead."

No phones during the school day isn't new for us.

We made this decision over five years ago, and it changed school life.

Break and lunch feel calmer. Students spend more time talking to each other. Lessons are not interrupted by multiple pings.

And in the classroom? Students write things down. They talk through answers. They work through problems without reaching for a shortcut.

Phones can be useful. They're part of everyday life. No point pretending otherwise.

But during the school day, phones away and attention back in the room.

With the UK Government now looking more closely at social media and under-16s, we know more families will be talking about phones, apps and online habits and home too.

The Cardiff Half is less than a month away.

Mrs Parry is still training hard and our ASC students have already started the Mexican Wave with a collections of fab signs ready to carry her from her office to the start line 🪧🧜‍♀️

Mrs Parry is running to raise funds and awareness for Llamau, supporting young people and children facing homelessness. Welsh Government figures show that 1,267 dependent children were living in temporary accommodation in Wales at the end of March this year.

Before anyone can get ahead, they need somewhere safe to start.

If you can't make it on the day, give Mrs Parry a cheer as you see her around the school... if you can keep pace with her of course.
