Hi I’m Sophie and I run Baby Sensory classes in Cardiff- Precious early learning for babies (Birth - 13 months). Imagination is a vital part of childhood.

Every week a new adventure, new activities and helping parents form a deeper connection with their baby. Our multi-award winning classes (no less than 5 at this year’s What’s On awards) will introduce your baby to a world of sensory exploration, where the two of you can relax, have fun and share in each other’s delight. For ours is a magical world, full of glowing balls, light shows, puppets, bubb

Today, my baby boy turns 6, and this week I celebrate 4 years of Baby Sensory. 💛

Two milestones that are so closely linked because without him, there would be no Baby Sensory Cardiff.

Six years ago, I became a mum. Six years ago, I began the most beautiful, challenging, exhausting and rewarding journey of my life. And six years later, that little boy is still the reason behind so much of what I do.

What many of you may not know is that I started Baby Sensory during the week of his birthday. Not because life wasn’t busy enough already, but because of him.

I started this business because I experienced firsthand how special those baby classes were. The memories, the milestones, the friendships, and the confidence they gave me as a new parent. I wanted to give that back to other families.

Behind Baby Sensory is a mum who has been through the sleepless nights, the worries, the mum guilt, the overwhelming love, and all the highs and lows that so many of you share with me in class each week.

When I chat with you after class, celebrate your baby’s milestones, or listen when you’re having a tough week, I understand. I’ve been there too.

This business was built because of my little boy and for families like ours.

He’s given me more than I could ever put into words—thousands of memories, countless laughs, a whole new perspective on life, and the courage to build something I truly love.

Every year I find myself missing the little boy he was while falling in love with the boy he’s becoming.

So today, as he turns 6 and I celebrate 4 years of Baby Sensory, I’m feeling incredibly grateful. Grateful for the boy who made me a mum. Grateful for the journey that led me here. And grateful for every family who has trusted me to be part of their baby’s first year.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. ❤️

Swaddling is a technique that has been used for many centuries and in recent years it has become a popular settling technique in the Netherlands and some parts of the USA and UK. In the UK, about 19% of babies are swaddled in the first 4 weeks of life.

Have a look below to see the benefits of safe swaddling.

To practise safe swaddling you can buy specially made swaddle wraps, or swaddle your baby loosely in a lightweight blanket. You should also stop swaddling your baby at around 3 months, before they begin to roll over.

Activity of the Week: Cushion Mountain 🏔️

One of my favourite home play activities for babies of all ages is Cushion Mountain! Whether you’re getting down on the floor for tummy time and mirror play with a younger baby, or creating a homemade soft play adventure for older babies to climb, crawl and explore, this simple activity is packed with developmental benefits.

✨ Benefits of Cushion Mountain:

💚 Encourages tummy time and strengthens neck, shoulder and core muscles.

💛Supports gross motor development through rolling, crawling, climbing and balancing.

💚Improves coordination and body awareness as babies learn how to move over different surfaces.

💛Develops spatial awareness and understanding of height, depth and distance.

💚Builds confidence and independence as babies overcome new physical challenges.

💛Strengthens problem-solving skills as they work out how to navigate the cushions.

💚Provides valuable sensory input through different textures, angles and movements.

💛Encourages bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together).

💚Promotes vestibular development, which supports balance and movement.

💛 Creates opportunities for bonding, interaction and lots of giggles!

As babies adjust to new levels and challenges, they’re building important skills while having fun. The best part? You can create it using cushions, pillows and blankets you already have at home! 💛

Have you tried Cushion Mountain with your little one? Let me know how they got on! 👇🏻

We kicked off the World Cup with our
Baby Olympics Week! 🏅⚽

From ball games and baby obstacle courses to our special torch ceremony, Olympic-themed Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, and even baby football, our little athletes were busy learning, exploring and developing new skills every step of the way.

After all that excitement, we’re sure there were some very tired babies (and parents!) by the end of the session! 💙

What was your favourite activity this week? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

🏅 It’s Baby Olympics Week! 🏅

This week, our little athletes will be taking part in a variety of fun sporting activities designed to support their development while having lots of fun!

Exercise and movement play a vital role in a baby’s development. Not only can movement act as a natural form of pain relief during growth spurts, but it also helps to strengthen both the upper and lower body, improve balance, coordination, posture, and build important motor skills.

Babies spend so much time being held, carried, or sitting on our laps, so we’ll also be sharing simple movement ideas that you can recreate at home to encourage active play, support development, and strengthen your bond with your little one.

We can’t wait to see our tiny champions in action this week! 🥇

Are you going for gold this week, babies? 💛🏅👶✨

Have you heard of the famous Baby Sensory nap? 💙

It’s not a myth! After class, many babies drift off into a deep sleep because every activity has been carefully designed and researched to support their development while gently stimulating their senses.

At Baby Sensory, your little one experiences a wide variety of activities that encourage sensory exploration, learning through play, social interaction with their peers, hand-eye coordination, visual tracking, music, movement, language development, and so much more.

And if your baby sleeps through part of the class, don’t worry—you are definitely not paying for a nap! Babies continue to absorb so much from their environment, including the sounds, music, sights, and even familiar smells around them. Research shows they can still take in an incredible amount while resting.

Plus, the benefits aren’t just for your baby. You’ll learn about your baby’s development, discover simple play ideas to try at home, and take away songs and activities that become part of your everyday routine long after the class has finished.

It’s just one of the many reasons why it’s never too early to start your Baby Sensory journey—and why the Baby Sensory nap has become so famous! 😴✨

🌿 Activity of the Week: Exploring Smell! 👃(Last weeks English Country Garden)

Did you know that a baby’s sense of smell is one of their most highly developed senses? It’s also one of the senses we often forget to include in sensory play!

This week, why not get out some herbs and spices from your kitchen and let your little one have a gentle sniff? You could also make a conscious effort to explore different scents when you’re out and about—freshly cut grass, flowers in the garden, or even baking bread.

Talking about different smells helps babies make connections and learn more about the world around them.

Have you ever tried smell-based sensory play with your baby? Let me know in the comments what scents your little one seems to love most! 💛

🌸 More gorgeous photos from our English Country Garden week! 🌸

What a beautiful way to start our Summer Term! ☀️

This week, we explored the sights, sounds, and smells of summer through our sensory scent trays, enjoyed movement and exercise around the mulberry bush, and learned some new signs while saying hello to Peter Rabbit. 🐰 We discovered so many wonderful visual and tactile experiences in the garden and were captivated by a lovely puppet show too!

And that wasn’t even everything! Every Baby Sensory class is packed with 7 brand-new activities for you and your little one to enjoy each week, ensuring there’s always something exciting, engaging, and developmentally beneficial to experience together.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us and made the first week of our Summer Term so special. 💛

We can’t wait to see you all again next week as we head to the Olympics and go for gold! 🥇🏅✨
