One thing I've noticed after teaching A Level Chemistry for many years is that confidence and ability are not the same thing.

Some of the most capable students I've taught have also been the least confident.

Confidence often comes after success, not before it.

FROM AN E TO TWO Bs IN JUST 3 MONTHS

When Tia joined the Chemistry Platinum Programme (Y12), she described herself as working at an E grade.

Three months later, her latest assessment grades were:

⭐ B

When I asked her what had helped most, she said:

"The keywords things, and the key concepts, and the topics, that was helpful, and how to structure and the different command words and how to apply them in the exam."

She also discovered she is an auditory learner and began using techniques such as explaining chemistry out loud to herself, teaching concepts to a mirror, and talking through mechanisms to improve understanding.

One of the things I love most about teaching is seeing students realise they are capable of far more than they thought.

Grades are not fixed.

Confidence is not fixed.

Ability is not fixed.

With the right guidance, the right strategy and consistent effort, remarkable progress can happen surprisingly quickly.

A level chemistry students - year 12

It’s not lack of revision.

It’s lack of exam thinking.

Students revise:

❌ Flashcards

But exams reward:
