Every summer I meet students who tell me:

"I understand it when my teacher explains it."

"I revise."

"I make notes."

Yet they still struggle to answer exam questions.

The challenge isn't usually effort.

The challenge is learning how to think like an examiner.

That's one of the skills we focus on in White Gold before students begin Year 13.

One of my favourite parts of teaching is watching students discover that they are capable of far more than they thought.

Sometimes the biggest change isn't chemistry knowledge.

It's confidence.

And confidence changes everything.

One thing I've noticed after teaching A Level Chemistry for many years is that confidence and ability are not the same thing.

Some of the most capable students I've taught have also been the least confident.

Confidence often comes after success, not before it.

FROM AN E TO TWO Bs IN JUST 3 MONTHS

When Tia joined the Chemistry Platinum Programme (Y12), she described herself as working at an E grade.

Three months later, her latest assessment grades were:

⭐ B
⭐ B

When I asked her what had helped most, she said:

"The keywords things, and the key concepts, and the topics, that was helpful, and how to structure and the different command words and how to apply them in the exam."

She also discovered she is an auditory learner and began using techniques such as explaining chemistry out loud to herself, teaching concepts to a mirror, and talking through mechanisms to improve understanding.

One of the things I love most about teaching is seeing students realise they are capable of far more than they thought.

Grades are not fixed.

Confidence is not fixed.

Ability is not fixed.

With the right guidance, the right strategy and consistent effort, remarkable progress can happen surprisingly quickly.

Well done, Tia. I'm looking forward to seeing what Year 13 brings.

"I knew it, but I couldn't answer the question."

One of the biggest surprises for many students moving into Year 13 is that knowing the chemistry isn't always enough.

Many students can explain a topic perfectly in class, but then struggle to apply that knowledge to unfamiliar exam questions.

Over the years, I've found that this is one of the biggest reasons students lose marks
Have you ever heard your child say:

This is exactly why so many students lose marks despite knowing the chemistry.

A level chemistry students - year 12

It’s not lack of revision.

It’s lack of exam thinking.

Students revise:
❌ Notes
❌ Flashcards
❌ Videos

But exams reward:
✔ Structure
✔ Precision
✔ Mark scheme language

That’s the gap.

And schools rarely teach it explicitly.

That’s exactly what we fix in the summer programme.

Your child is about to move into Year 13.

This is where most grades drop.

Not because the content is harder…
But because the MARKING is harsher.

Students are expected to:
✔ Write like an examiner
✔ Link ideas clearly
✔ Use precise language under pressure

And most don’t know how.

That’s why students who were getting B/C in Year 12 suddenly fall behind.

This summer is the difference.
