In 2026, we couldn’t take our students to the museum… so the museum came to the
Greek School of Wales, bringing history to life! 🇬🇷🏛️ #ΒιωματικήΜάθηση

Thanks to the generosity of collector Danellis and his wife, our students and community members experienced an extraordinary journey through the Greek War of Independence: Across three interactive bilingual sessions, every piece of his remarkable 1821 collection became a story.

Our students don’t just learn history… they experience it!

A very special thank you to Menelaos for the unique handmade gift he created:

A gift that will always remind our students of the courage, sacrifice and ideals of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

🇪🇺 It’s official! European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS) Plaque and Award have been presented to The Greek School of Wales!! 🥳

👏 Many congratulations to our Junior European Ambassadors for their outstanding hard work, enthusiasm and commitment and to our teachers and volunteers in promoting active participation through a wide range of inspiring activities... with many more still to come!

(𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻)
🙏 Όπως κάθε χρόνο, η Ελληνορθόδοξη Εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου, διαχρονικά δίπλα στον Ελληνισμό της Ουαλίας, τίμησε με ευλάβεια και σεβασμό τη μαύρη επέτειο της τουρκικής εισβολής στην Κύπρο.

🕯️ Με την τέλεση επιμνημόσυνης δέησης, απέτισε φόρο τιμής στους πεσόντες, στους αγνοουμένους και σε όλους όσοι επλήγησαν από τα τραγικά γεγονότα του 1974, διατηρώντας ζωντανή την ιστορική μνήμη και το διαχρονικό μήνυμα «Δεν Ξεχνώ».

🌿 Στο πλαίσιο της εκδήλωσης μνήμης, μαθητές του Ελληνικού Σχολείου Ουαλίας απήγγειλαν ποιήματα αφιερωμένα στην Κύπρο, ενώ η Διευθύντρια του Σχολείου, Ιωάννα Κανελάκη, απηύθυνε σύντομη ομιλία για τη σημασία της διατήρησης της ιστορικής μνήμης και της μεταλαμπάδευσής της στις νεότερες γενιές.

🤝 Ιδιαίτερη τιμή αποτέλεσε η παρουσία μελών της Greek Cypriot Brotherhood of Wales, τα οποία παρέστησαν για να αποτίσουν φόρο τιμής στα θύματα και να ενώσουν τη φωνή τους στο διαχρονικό μήνυμα:

🇬🇷🇨🇾 Preserving the historical truth: We Do Not Forget.

🙏 As it does every year, the Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, a longstanding pillar of the Hellenic community in Wales, commemorated with reverence and dignity the anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

🕯️ Through a memorial service, prayers were offered in memory of those who lost their lives, those who remain missing, and all who suffered as a result of the tragic events of 1974, reaffirming the enduring message: "We Do Not Forget."

🌿 As part of the commemoration, pupils from the Greek School of Wales recited poems dedicated to Cyprus, while the School's Headteacher, Ioanna Kanelaki, delivered a short address on the importance of preserving our shared history and passing its lessons on to future generations.

🤝 The presence of members of the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood of Wales Gcaw Wales added particular significance to the occasion, as they joined as part of the community paying tribute to the victims and standing together in remembrance.

As part of UNESCO’s global celebration of International Book Day, celebrated every year on 23 April, we were delighted to welcome Diavazo Greek Books to the Greek School of Wales on the last Saturday of April.

Children, parents, and teachers had the opportunity to explore a wonderful selection of Greek books for both young readers and adults, celebrating together the joy of reading and the importance of keeping the Greek language and culture alive through literature.

Truly grateful to Diavazo Bookstore for their many years of support, excellent collaboration, and continued contribution to our school community. Their dedication to providing high-quality Greek books has inspired generations of readers within our school family.

Thank you for being part of our journey and for helping us nurture a love for books and learning. 💙

Ημέρα της Ευρώπης! 🇪🇺 As a newly recognised European Parliament Ambassador School, our school celebrated Europe Day on 9th May by learning about the values and cultures that connect people across Europe.

Through our “European Tree” project, proudly displayed on our school wall, students celebrated the spirit of cooperation, friendship, and unity that lies at the heart of the European community!

New Home for Greek School of Wales Sport! 🏀⚽

We are incredibly grateful to the Embassy of Greece in London and Navarino, whose generosity has transformed the sporting opportunities available to our students, reflecting our vision of the Hellenic Centre of Wales as a thriving educational and community hub, far beyond a traditional language school.

Their support covered 100% of the cost of:

🏀 Two basketball hoops, basketballs and team kits
⚽ Two football goals, footballs and team kits
🟦 Full sports court lining, designed in the national colours of Greece (blue and white) and Wales (red and white), symbolising the friendship and enduring ties between our two nations.
❤️ A new defibrillator for our sports facilities, following Navarino's generous donation of the Greek School of Wales' first defibrillator in 2021.
📚 A collection of over 15 sports-related books, generously donated by Navarino and the Embassy of Greece in London to enrich our school library.

The project was made possible through the outstanding partnership and continued support of Thornhill Primary School, whose collaboration has enabled our school to create a home for sport.

🇬🇷 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿A highlight of the celebration was the official unveiling of the commemorative plaque, performed by:

• H.E. the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to the United Kingdom, Mr Yannis Tsaousis, together with
• Paul Tucker, Headteacher of Thornhill Primary School
• Ioanna Kanelaki, Headteacher of the Greek School of Wales

The official inauguration brought together members of the local community alongside distinguished guests and civic leaders, including:

From September 2026, these facilities will enable the launch of:

⚽ Greek School of Wales Football Team
🏀 Greek School of Wales Basketball Team
⚽ Hellenic Centre of Wales Adult Football
🏀 Hellenic Centre of Wales Adult Basketball

Together, these new facilities represent far more than new courts; they are an investment in lifelong friendships, community participation and the continued growth of Hellenic education and culture in Wales.
