Your phone. Your focus. 📱

At Aspire, phones are away during focused teaching and used when they genuinely support learning.

Learning to manage distractions is part of becoming an independent learner: knowing when technology helps and when to put it aside.

Meet Linda 👋

Co-founder of Aspire Education Cardiff and a hugely important part of what makes Aspire, Aspire.

Linda brings years of teaching experience across primary, secondary and A-level, supporting students in Maths, English, Humanities, Psychology and Sociology.
Her approach is warm, practical and straightforward: high expectations, strong foundations and the right support for each individual student.

She knows when to encourage, when to challenge and when a student needs that extra bit of confidence to keep going.

At Aspire, it’s never about doing the work for our students. It’s about helping them become increasingly confident and independent in doing it for themselves.

The after-school battle doesn’t need to start the minute they walk through the door.

For Year 10 and 11 students, a little time to reset can make it much easier to get started with homework and revision.

A snack. A change of clothes. Ten minutes to switch off. Then a quick check-in about what actually needs doing tonight.

The aim isn’t to fill every evening with work. It’s to help students build a routine they can manage independently — especially as GCSE pressure starts to increase.

At Aspire, we’re always working towards the same thing:

Support → Structure → Independence

Save this one for the next evening when getting started feels like the hardest part. 🤍

Sometimes the hardest part of revision is simply getting started.

One strategy I use at home — and often recommend to parents — is body doubling.

It’s very simple: sit alongside your teenager while they work, but get on with something of your own. Emails, paperwork, planning, reading — it doesn’t really matter.

You’re not teaching them.
You’re not checking every answer.
And you’re definitely not repeatedly asking, “Have you finished yet?” 😅

You’re simply there.

For some students, having another person quietly working nearby makes it much easier to start, stay focused and complete a short block of work.

Try 20–25 minutes, phones away, one clear task each, then stop and reset.

The important bit? This isn't about creating dependence.

At Aspire, the aim is always:

Support → Routine → Independence

We give students enough support to get going, while gradually helping them develop the habits to manage their own learning.

Have you ever tried body doubling with your teenager?

Being prepared really does make a difference. ✏️📚

At Aspire, we place a lot of importance on getting the basics right — calculator ready, maths set complete, pens and pencils packed, folder organised.

Why? Because students who arrive prepared can settle quickly, focus immediately and make the most of every minute of their lesson.

It might seem like a small thing, but learning to take responsibility for your own equipment is part of becoming a capable, confident and independent learner.

Good habits now make a big difference later.

Being prepared is the first step to succeeding. ✓

A little introduction from me 👋

I’m Lana — founder of Aspire Education Cardiff, Science & Maths teacher, fluent Welsh speaker and, perhaps just as importantly, a parent navigating secondary school, GCSEs and A-levels too.

So I understand the pressure from both sides.

At Aspire, I believe students need high expectations and the right support. Not someone doing the work for them, and not endless tutoring for the sake of it.

The aim is to help them understand what they’re learning, practise effectively, learn from mistakes and gradually become confident, capable and independent learners.

I teach Science and Maths in both English and Welsh medium, with experience across WJEC, AQA and Pearson Edexcel.

Different students need different things at different stages — and that’s exactly why our approach is personal.

We often talk about building children’s confidence.

But confidence doesn’t always need to come first.

Sometimes a young person needs to experience something more powerful: doing something they initially found difficult.

Learning it. Practising it. Getting it wrong. Trying again. And eventually mastering it.

That’s why at Aspire we don’t believe good tuition means removing every difficulty.

We provide the teaching, structure and support — while gradually encouraging students to think, attempt, correct and persevere independently.

Because genuine academic confidence is built on something solid:

competence.

Support. Challenge. Independence.
