Cardiff Sixth Form College student Joshua Lavelle is celebrating his A-Level results today after achieving a full suite of A*s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and securing his place to study Mathematics at St John's College, Oxford.

Joshua, who joined Cardiff Sixth Form College on a scholarship has distinguished himself as one of the College's most accomplished mathematicians, pursuing university-level mathematics years ahead of schedule.

Throughout his time at Cardiff Sixth Form College, Joshua immersed himself in advanced mathematics beyond the standard curriculum, attending specialist STEP classes designed to prepare students for the demanding entrance examinations traditionally used by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Under the guidance of STEP Maths Teacher, Huw Kilner, Joshua progressed rapidly through the material.
"I attended both the AS and A2 STEP classes in my first year and eventually we ran out of pure mathematics material to cover," said Joshua. "From there we moved on to university-level mathematics, which has been incredibly useful preparation for Oxford."
His studies advanced to topics rarely encountered before the later years of an undergraduate degree, including the Dirichlet’s Theorem in number theory.
"We were studying mathematics that is typically taught in the third or fourth year of university," he explained. "Those classes had a huge impact on me and showed me just how deep and fascinating mathematics can be."
Joshua's passion for the subject also led him to become President of Cardiff Sixth Form College's student-led Maths Society, where students explored mathematical ideas beyond the classroom and participated in a wide range of national and international competitions.
Under his leadership, more than 50 students took part in competitions including the UK Senior Maths Challenge, British Mathematical Olympiad, Rightangle Team Competition and the Berkeley Mathematics Tournament

Cardiff Sixth Form College students at the Cambridge campus have gained outstanding results this year with staff and students alike celebrating another year of top grades.

37.4% of grades awarded were at the highest, A* Grade level; 76.4% were awarded A*-A grades and 92.6% A*-B. Cardiff Sixth Form College has been the top school for A Level results in the UK for over a decade and opened its Cambridge campus in 2022.

The college on Regent St in Cambridge is the highest performing A level school in Cambridge and specialises in preparing students wanting to progress onto STEM courses such as medicine, engineering, computer science and maths at university. The college offers an extensive work experience programme, links with Cambridge University on EPQ projects, lectures and workshops and attracts top performing students from all over the globe.
Said Principal, Dr Julian Davies: “Our grades this year have been consistent with the high standards we have set since we started the college here in Cambridge and prove that excellent teaching, improving oracy and careers-based skills, as well as building our students confidence really makes a difference when applying to top universities. Nearly all our students this year have gained their first choice of university, and we have students going to Oxbridge, Imperial College, LSE and UCL amongst others to do some of the most competitive courses in the UK. I am very proud of both my staff and our students.”

Cardiff Sixth Form College students have gained outstanding results this year with over half of the grades reaching the top A* mark.
58.1% of grades at the college, which has been the UK’s top school for A level results for over a decade, were awarded the highest A* mark, 91.3% A*-A, a stunning 99.3% were awarded grades A*-B and 100% A*-C.

Cementing its place as one of the top academic schools in the UK, a third of the students at the college achieved four A* grades or more, half of the students achieved three or more A* grades and 90% of all students achieved three or more A grades.

“This has been another incredible cohort of Cardiff Sixth Form College students in 2026 who will be remembered for their work ethic and high standards which have been rightly recognised with outstanding results,” said Principal Tom Arrand. “It is a privilege to work with such motivated and inspirational students, and the staff who have facilitated their success.”

We’re delighted to announce CSFC student Edgar’s fantastic achievement in the Magdalene College (Cambridge) Armstrong Arts and Humanities Essay Competition 2026, where he was awarded Joint 3rd Place for an outstanding essay.
The judges were extremely impressed by the quality of the entries, making this a particularly impressive accomplishment. Edgar has also been awarded a prize in recognition of his success.
