☀️ What if sunlight could do the cleaning for you?
Cardiff University researchers are exploring new ways to use a self-cleaning technology that harnesses the power of sunlight to kill bacteria, remove stains and neutralise odours. Originally developed for reusable period products, the innovation is now being investigated for wider applications, including healthcare, sportswear and outdoor materials.
From improving menstrual health to tackling real-world challenges through sustainable innovation, it's exciting to see where this research could go next!

💡 What starts as a university project can become a business, an app, a start-up… or even the next big idea.
This year's Student Start-Up and Freelance Awards saw Cardiff students pitch 17 ventures in a Dragon's Den-style competition, with ideas ranging from educational gaming and AI-powered student tools to health and safety innovations and new technologies for nightlife venues.
A huge congratulations to all our finalists and winners for their creativity, ambition and determination!

🦦 What can otter poo tell us about conservation?
Quite a lot, it turns out.
Cardiff University scientists have developed a new DNA sampling technique that can reconstruct genetic information from otter spraint (droppings) alone - helping researchers study these protected animals without disturbing them or their habitats. The approach could also help monitor other species of conservation importance in the future.
It's a fascinating example of how innovative science can support wildlife conservation while keeping nature wild!
