What a great day at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition with Art Workshop students and friends!
Curated by artist Ryan Gander this year’s show provided an eclectic, fun and thought provoking experience, something for everyone among the 1800 plus artworks. There seemed to be a pink link of colour running through the gallery pieces and even in people’s choices of clothes, summery and fresh, which stood out against this year’s neutral pale walls. We thought the small sculpture exhibits stood out and drew you in, as well as some large 3D showstoppers by Art greats like Anthony Gormley. Detailed small scale drawings too that required time and focus to appreciate, an antidote to today’s scrolling-hooked stunted attention span.
A fantastic day out with great company, a lot of steps, many laughs, and always worth it!
Already having requests for another trip next year…😂
Extra thanks to Megan the Ferris coach driver, who expertly navigated her 56-seater Mercedes bus through the Piccadilly traffic. 💪🏼👏🏻
The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition trip with The Art Workshop community art school! Thanks to everyone for joining us on a wonderful day out in London to see this year’s fun and thought-provoking show, curated by eclectic artist Ryan Gander. We loved it, so many exciting artworks in all kinds of interesting mediums.
There seemed to us to be a pink link connecting the rooms with lovely pops of summer colour, both in the works and in people’s choice of clothes, which stood out against the neutral/whiteish choice for the gallery walls.
As well as the serious showstoppers we really liked the small sculpture choices which pulled you in and forced you to pay attention, and detailed drawings which demanded your time to appreciate (focus might be a vanishing skill these days) rewarding the effort.
So many cats. And bears. Quirky dogs too. Too much whimsy? Always popular with the public, as are the celebrity works by Harry Hill and Vic Reeves etc. But then everything has its place and value in this most democratic and egalitarian art show.
Thanks to Megan the driver who expertly guided her Mercedes 56 seater coach through the posh (and pushy) Piccadilly traffic and got us safely back to Cardiff 💪🏼. You deserved the whip round 🙏😂 👍

This is just a sample of The Art Workshop Summer Festival Exhibition event this year! These photos show only some the fantastic and innovative work being produced by all our groups. Made in class by our adult, teen and young learners too, with the help and encouragement of our wonderful team of professional Artist tutors.
So many exciting themes this season: kitchen cupboards, curves, memories, urban landscape and perspective, sweets, patterns, design, portraits, wildlife, in a whole range of mediums and techniques. Included are mixed media, watercolours, acrylics, oils, printmaking, drawing, textile art and more.
We think everyone should be truly proud of their work, it’s a testament to all the effort and dedication they’ve put into their courses.
The Summer Exhibition Open studios event and community Mural making was held as part of the annual Rhiwbina Summer Festival celebrations. Thanks to the festival organisers for another well organised and happy day.
