Our second-year BA Architecture students have been creating traditional massing models from clay, before learning how to optimise digital models ready for 3D printing. They can choose to advance and fire their models to presentation standard, or reclaim the clay to be used again โป
Alongside these traditional practices we're building their AI toolkit, allowing students to choose the blend that works for them.
Why? Because the best practitioners understand craft first.

Mae myfyrwyr yn eu hail flwyddyn ar y radd BA Pensaernรฏaeth wedi bod yn creu modelau traddodiadol o glai, cyn dysgu sut i optimeiddio modelau digidol yn barod ar gyfer argraffu 3D. Gallant ddewis datblygu a thanio eu modelau i'w cyflwyno, neu adennill y clai i'w ddefnyddio eto โป
Ochr yn ochr รข'r arferion traddodiadol hyn rydym yn adeiladu eu pecyn cymorth AI, gan ganiatรกu i fyfyrwyr ddewis y cymysgedd sydd fwyaf addas iddyn nhw.
Pam? Mae'r ymarferwyr gorau yn deall crefft yn gyntaf.

Dr Teksin Kopanoglu invited Product Design students to imagine the future of healthcare. Drawing on Teksin's research into the unintended consequences of healthcare technologies, students developed speculative designs that critiqued the positive and negative implications of smart products.
BA Product Design student Beth Chadburn proposed a self-monitoring system aimed at normalising conversations about vaginal health. Inspired by terrariums, the system includes a visual display that reacts to data, helping individuals to understand fluctuations in their natural microbiome.
Beth also discussed her final year research on the CSAD Podcast, in which she examines how androcentric biometric data in medical research reduces the effectiveness of female hip replacement design.

The Pigment Library fosters a deeper understanding of materials and colour, with a particular emphasis on responsible sourcing and regenerative practices. The Library helps participants in building meaningful and informed relationships with different materials and their locale.
Established in 2023 by Technician Demonstrator Laura Lillie and developed in collaboration with students, the physical collection is linked to a digital resource and holds mineral pigments, waste-stream colourants, and high-chroma lake pigments extracted from the plant and fungi kingdom.
Many of the cultivated colour sources have been harvested on our Llandaff campus from the Sustainable Growing Futures botanical dye garden, and can be used to make paints, printmaking and drawing inks, pastels, surface finishes, and bio-composites.

Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a collaborative process where healthcare professionals and patients make joint treatment decisions. Relying on clear communication and informative resources, Senior Lecturer Amelia Huw Morgan and Health Sciences staff are researching illustrationโs role in aiding SDM.
In a Welsh Government-supported project, master's students co-produced information resources on administering hydrocortisone injections correctly, steroid management, and the risks/benefits of sodium valproate.
Results showed that illustration can reduce misunderstandings during consultations by providing effective support materials.

Proceed At Own Risk...
BA Photography graduate, Jack Hughes, had his degree show project โPROCEED AT OWN RISKโ selected from hundreds of other students across the UK to become one of Source Magazine's selected graduate photographers.
In his project, Jack used photography to document a 160-mile walk he made from Cardiff to his first home in Great Bedwyn.
His work was selected by Michael Itkoff, the founder of Daylight Books, who described the work as โA heartfelt documentation of a long journey home, this project is both intimate and isolated. Making such a long pilgrimage leaves ample room for reflection and introspection, and these sparse landscapes are evidence of both.โ
Well done Jack!

Ewch Ymlaen Ar Eich Risg Eich Hun...
Dewiswyd prosiect sioe gradd Jack Hughes, graddedig BA Ffotograffiaeth, โPROCEED AT OWN RISKโ o blith cannoedd o fyfyrwyr eraill ledled y DU i ddod yn un o ffotograffwyr graddedig dethol Source Magazine.
Yn ei brosiect, defnyddiodd Jack ffotograffiaeth i ddogfennu taith gerdded 160 milltir a wnaeth o Gaerdydd iโw gartref cyntaf yn Great Bedwyn.
Dewiswyd ei waith gan Michael Itkoff, sylfaenydd Daylight Books, a ddisgrifiodd y gwaith fel โDogfennaeth galonnog o daith hir adref, maeโr prosiect hwn a theimlad o agosatrwydd ac ynysigrwydd. Mae gwneud pererindod mor hir yn gadael digon o le i fyfyrio ac ymyrryd ac maeโr tirweddau prin hyn yn dystiolaeth oโr ddau."
Da iawn Jack!
