In classes this week, we will be exploring MIRRORS!
Why do we love mirrors?
The joy babies get by spotting their own reflection in a mirror helps:
β€ Increase their ability to focus, depth perception and tracking skills
𧑠Begin to develop social skills
π Foster their curiosity
π Enhance their cognitive development (by introducing the concept of object permanence)
πStrengthen their bodies (by having little ones lift their heads or use their torso and arm muscles to look in a mirror)
π Spatial awareness (as they see their surroundings from a new perspective)
β€ Body language: helps them to learn about their own body and how he or she looks, and relating his own gestures and movements with those that he observes in others.
𧑠Empathy: Your child will look at themselves, smile, and find a response to their happiness. In doing so, they learn to feel empathy towards others.
π Language: as they babble and coo and chat at their reflection they are practising the art of conversation.
π Self recognition: once babies are older (on average 18-22 months) they begin to recognise the baby in the mirror as themselves. Why not try the rouge test, pop a bit of red lipstick on their nose. If they try to rub the mirror, they are still developing this skill. If they instantly reach for their own nose they know the reflection is of themselves.
