Cardiff band Budgie were an inspiration to so many famous bands such as Van Halen, Mettallica and Iron Maiden. Never really made the big time themselves, but wrote some great songs. Loved their album covers and probably worked out most of the riffs as a kid. Tony Bourge was such an original guitar player.

My bucket list for 2024:

• Beg my body to conform so it doesn't break down in the gym (or anywhere else for that matter)
• Actually get to play walking rugby instead of coaching and reffing
• Get back walking up in Brecon and Snowdonia
• Continue to pass on anything I know to my guitar students so they can be the best they can be
• Spend more time trying to be the best guitar player I can be
• Write and record more through my home recording studio and with several confederates (album in the making)
• Hope to God 72 million Americans do what's right for the world
• Give back to my parents what they did for me

One present and one past guitar pupil at the New Theatre watching Mateo (centre) as guitar player/actor ‘Zak’ in this week’s Orbit Theatre Company’s ‘School of Rock’. You really couldn’t meet two nicer people who’ve worked so hard to get to where they want to be.

Great to catch up with Jack Butler (right) who has carved out a successful career as a session guitarist performing, writing and recording. He’s busy rehearsing and playing with Hana Lili supporting ‘’Coldplay’ at the Principality Stadium next week. Privileged to have played, but a small part in the careers of these two talented musicians who deserve everything that comes their way.

Me: Wait a minute... I recognise that smirk. That's a new £4,000 Taylor guitar your wearing isn't it?
Paul: Stop staring at it, you'll make it devalue. By the way, can you give me a lift home? I had to sell the car.

The moral of the story is... Always spend as much money as you can on new guitars.
