When your youngest big dreamer makes their very first activity suggestion, you 100% have to set it up immediately!

My planning is very much child-led. At the beginning of each season, I create a loose bank of nature-inspired activities that I can dip into when needed, but honestly, it’s the children who dictate what we do from day to day.

At the start of every day, I ask the children what they would like to do, and they come up with the most amazing ideas. Their curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm are always the best source of inspiration.

Today, my littlest big dreamer found a stick during our Forest School session and asked if she could paint with it when we got home.

My response? Absolutely!

So that’s exactly what we did. 🌿🎨

Sometimes the best activities aren’t the ones we spend hours planning—they’re the ones sparked by a child’s curiosity in the moment. Following children’s interests helps them feel valued, encourages independence, and reminds us that learning can begin with something as simple as a stick found on a woodland walk.

The children discovered many patterns shapes and textures in the natural using playdough and ink. Lots of opportunities for language development!

Here’s a snapshot of the learning that happens through free play (when the environment is set correctly)
Here, a little one is creating a chrysalis out of tape—and yes, she used the word chrysalis!
In this moment, we can see an incredible range of learning taking place. She is using scientific language, demonstrating a deep understanding of the world around her, and showing advanced fine motor skills as she carefully uses scissors and tape. She is sharing a story, explaining a process, and showing a strong sense of independence and confidence in her own ideas.
When you know what to look for, the learning in play becomes impossible to miss. Free play is rich with opportunities for children to explore, create, problem-solve, communicate, and make sense of their world. Sometimes the most powerful learning happens when children are simply given the time, space, and freedom to follow their curiosity.

I haven’t shared the enhanced provision for a while so here is what is currently setup in the playroom for the children to explore. These crate reflect the children’s discoveries and interests while still meeting the area of learning.

A resting bee was spotted on our morning walk and it inspired the rest of our morning play ❤️
“Sam, why is it so still?”
“She’s resting to build up her energy for a busy morning collecting pollen and nectar.”
“Can we help her?”
So to help the bees when they need a rest, we made some bee drinking dishes to place in the garden ❤️ I just love it when meaningful moments happen like this 🥰

A bee..autiful woodland session with friends.

We celebrated World Bee Day by making playdough bees in forest school. The children collected yellow nature treasures to adorn their bees and we finished the session by reading one of my favourite The Bumblebear.
