Looking at the psychology of how parents and children interact with each other

The purpose of this project is to observe how parents and children interact with each other when working together on homework, looking specifically at the support the parent provides the child. We will also be looking at what impact the home environment has on how the parent and child interact. The study is taking place internationally and so we will compare how parents and children from different countries complete homework together.

Would you like to participate in a research study?

We are conducting a study at Canterbury Christ Church University looking at how parents support their children's learning through play. As family members vary in the way they communicate and interact with their children, this may influence the process of learning at home and the child’s future academic achievement.
Parents' support is especially important for children at the beginning of their school life and so I'm looking for mothers with children aged 4-5 (currently in reception) to participate in the study. This would involve two visits to your home, a familiar environment for your child. You and your child will play lots of fun games together and your child will be learning at the same time.
As a thank you, you will receive a £10 voucher and a DVD of you and your child playing together.
All your data will be secure and completely confidential as the study meets ethical guidelines.
If you would like to take part in this study or would like further information, please email: [email protected] Thank you for your time.

Is your child just starting school? Could you help us with an international study about children’s learning at home?

My name is Ekaterina and I am a researcher from Canterbury Christ Church University. I am looking for mothers with reception age children in the UK and in Russia to participate in my research. I am looking at children’s learning at home (for example, doing homework) in both countries.

Research would involve visiting you and your child at home twice over a seven-month period, at the beginning and the end of school year. Each visit will take up to two hours. If you prefer us not to visit you at home I can arrange for you come to Canterbury Christ Church University.

What does home visit include?

During our visits, you and your child will be asked to complete a range of tasks and activities, some together and some alone. For example, you will be given a series of simple learning games and asked to play them together. While your child is completing tasks with me, you will be asked to fill in some questionnaires. We will use a video recorder to record the games and activities and you will be given a DVD copy to take home at the end of the project.

Each family will also receive a £10 gift voucher as a thank you for taking part.
