Today marked the start of Black History Month across the UK and here at Kent.

Every October, the month gives us all an opportunity to explore the rich culture, origins, histories, and achievements of African and Caribbean communities and their diaspora.

This year's theme is 'Honouring Our Communities'. The theme recognises the unseen individuals, such as volunteers, teachers, nurses, carers, and local leaders, who strengthen and sustain Black life across the UK. It shifts the focus from prominent historical milestones to the daily acts of perseverance and community care that build collective progress.

To celebrate the month, we’ll be hosting a range of events, like our Belonging and Beyond event this evening, which will see academics across the university talking about their own university journeys, paths into academia and more. We’ll also be hosting several social coffee events, a cultural movie night and creating a Black History Month-themed affirmation wall in the Templeman Library.

University of Kent students to be offered MenB vaccine as part of national rollout ℹ️

Earlier this year, the government announced a one-off, time-limited MenB vaccination programme to help protect one million young people. This is particularly important to our community at Kent, and as part of the national rollout, we’ll be offering MenB vaccinations on campus for eligible students.

If you’re a new student, you may already have received your first dose through your home GP. If you haven’t, you may be able to receive one or both doses through the programme at Kent.

If you’re returning, you may have received the vaccine on campus earlier this year and may already be protected, but it is still worth checking your records if you are unsure.

Whether you’ve just started at Kent or are returning to campus, we encourage you to check your eligibility through your GP, participating pharmacy or the University medical centre, and find out what options are available.

Autumn vaccination clinics 📆

Thursday 1 and Friday 2 October, 10:00 – 16:00 | MenB, Canterbury Campus, Senate building | No booking needed. You can attend for a first or second dose.

We’re also continuing to work closely with our partners at the NHS and UKSHA as well as Meningitis Now and the Meningitis Research Foundation to inform our students about the vaccine and support them to get it quickly and easily.

The Meningitis Research Foundation will also have a stall on campus during Welcome Fair, so please go and have a chat with them to find out more about MenB.

Go along to Welcome events
Join a society or sports club
