From locking in at the library to being Chief Bucket Manager™ doing Jaja Ding D**g karaoke, hear from our Katie! She tells us all about her placement in Iceland.

“You are instantly best friends with anyone you meet, whether you bump into someone in the shop or the geothermal pool! Húsavík is small, so we had to make our own fun by hosting potluck dinners, endless Jaja Ding D**g karaoke, playing card games while sipping coffee in local cafes, and spending the evenings staring at the mountains while soaking in the geothermal infinity pool.”

Roman egg found in Aylesbury still has contents after 1,700 years 13/02/2024

'It was a challenge to scan this wet and fragile object, which might be the only one of its kind, but when we saw there was something inside the shell it instantly became worth it! I'm excited to see what the next scientific analyses will reveal.'

Dr Chris Dunmore scanned the 1,700 year old Aylesbury egg in our Imaging Centre For Life Sciences.

Dominique Gonçalves is a Mozambican ecologist who manages the Gorongosa Elephant Ecology Project since 2017 in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique. Her work is a holistic blend of ecology, behaviour, and conservation, to help build coexistence between communities and elephants throughout the Park’s buffer zone. A passionate advocate of girls’ education to prevent early marriage, Gonçalves also supports the park’s Girls’ Club program through the role models initiative.

Dominique was the narrator of an award-winning film called “Our Gorongosa: a Park for the People”. She is a National Geographic Society Explorer and has been featured in National Geographic Channel’s “Women of Impact” film. In 2020, she was nominated for the Pritzker Genius Award Prize.

🐘Her talk, “Living with Giants: Elephant Conservation in Gorongosa, Mozambique” will take you through the fall and recovery of the elephant population, and its impacts in the social-ecological system of one of the most successful restoration efforts in Africa.

Joining academic societies are not only a great way to make friends, but also help you with the transition to university and its workload.

SAC has a great variety of academic groups, such as Ecogeogsoc, Conservation society and Anthropology.

Here they are in action at the SAC 2022 Christmas party, what a lovely bunch!

Yesterday was the first day of field work in Costa Rica for those of us on the Wildlife Conservation Stage 3 field trip!

It’s already been amazing! 😍The day started off with a workshop in the middle of a thunderstorm, followed by field work, and topped off with some incredible wildlife!

So far, we’ve set up experiments for our assignments, and assisted with their wildlife surveys- including mammals 🐒, otters 🦦, macaw 🦜 , and turtles 🐢

Stay tuned for some wildlife moments, and some forest fails! Follow stories for regular updates 🇨🇷
