No.

But I also don't want to underestimate the benefit of starting earlier.

Knowledge compounds.

A new word learned today helps us understand something we read next month. Better times-table recall makes fractions easier. Improved reading helps with comprehension AND maths problems.

And perhaps most importantly, confidence compounds too.

Starting now gives us time to learn without constantly feeling like we're racing towards a deadline.

If you're thinking about starting after October half term, that's absolutely fine. If you're ready now, though, there's no reason to wait.

Our Year 5 Kent Test groups have availability Wednesday–Friday.

“But it's online…”

I understand it.

Parents sometimes imagine a child staring silently at a screen for an hour while a tutor talks at them.

That would be awful. 😂

Our online sessions still have the same Mr C's energy.

We play games. We laugh. Children use physical resources. They answer questions, explain ideas, compete, collaborate and sometimes get things spectacularly wrong.

And that's okay.

There are actually some lovely advantages too. Children are learning from the comfort of home, often much more relaxed than they would be somewhere unfamiliar.

Online shouldn't mean less engaging.

It just means we have to teach online properly.

Our weekly Kent Test sessions are online, with a maximum of six children in each group. Our monthly workshops and mock tests give children opportunities to meet and learn together in person too.

There is another way to prepare

If you're starting to think seriously about the Kent Test, you might also be wondering what the next 11 months are going to look like.

Practice papers? Tests? Scores? More tests?

It doesn't have to be like that.

My biggest frustration with some Kent Test preparation is that there's too much assessing and not enough actual learning.

Yes, we need to understand the test. Yes, children need to become familiar with the questions they'll face. But most of our time should be spent helping them get BETTER at the skills behind those questions.

Reading. Vocabulary. Maths. Problem solving. Reasoning. Confidence. Resilience.

And we can laugh, play games and enjoy ourselves while we're doing it.

That's what Kent Test preparation looks like at Mr C's Tutoring.

COPING WITH PRESSURE

Knowing the answer is only part of test preparation.

Children also need tools for those moments when their minds go blank, the clock feels too fast, or a question looks impossible.

During tuition, we practise strategies that help students pause, think clearly and move forward. Games and gentle challenges give them opportunities to experience pressure in a safe, supportive environment.

These are valuable skills for the Kent Test and for school life beyond it.

Small-group tuition offers something special.
