Did you know that our oceans are a vital part of Earth’s life-support system – and that whales play an important role in keeping them healthy?

Join us for a brand-new, FREE and interactive virtual show where primary pupils become space scientists and ocean detectives!

Working alongside STEM Ambassadors, pupils will:
Discover how satellites help us observe and understand our amazing planet.
Learn fascinating facts about magnificent humpback whales and the important role they play in our oceans.

Design and build their very own Earth Observation satellite before using it to explore the oceans from space.

Take on a mission to track whales and uncover how space technology can help us protect our planet.

Discover why teamwork – both on Earth and in space – is essential for tackling some of the challenges facing our planet.

There will also be an opportunity for pupils to ask questions directly to our STEM experts at the end of the show.

And the mission doesn't stop there! Schools will be able to continue their Space Whales adventure with follow-up activities, including our exciting Design-a-Satellite Poster Competition.

Physical Computing Workshop with STFC: Coding with Crumbles Teacher CPD

Thursday 24th September from 4pm to 5:30pm

Virtual

Join Science and Technology Facilities Council online on for an engaging 90-minute, free teacher training session introducing the Crumble Controller, a programmable microcontroller designed for primary and lower secondary classrooms.

Through hands-on activities and practical challenges, you'll discover how physical computing can inspire pupils to build, invent and code their own creations while developing computing and STEM skills. All activities are curriculum-linked and supported by a comprehensive teacher resource pack.

In addition, every participating teacher will receive a free Crumble Controller set for the training session that can be used in the classroom.

Registration closes at 5pm on 14 September.

Please note the need for Confirmation and Cancellation.

Due to the cost of kit provided, we ask for each attendee to commit to attending to this training session. Ten days before the session, we will send out a confirmation of attendance that you must respond to in order to receive the physical Crumble kit. No shows or cancellation with less than 24 hours' notice will be required to return the Crumble set to STFC and cover the shipping costs.

The Rochester Bridge Trust are hosting the free adventure golf course at St John’s Chatham daily from 10am to 4pm until 8 August.

Putt your way through six holes and six iconic bridges, including Rochester Bridge and the Dartford Crossing, and give your children the opportunity to learn more about engineering.

The Adventure Golf is free with no booking required, and will be open every day from 10am-4pm.

Upcoming Public Webinars from RAL Space

RAL Space are running a series of public webinars around the solar eclipse. These will be a family-friendly talk, some slightly more technical talks about solar missions, and then a live stream for the solar eclipse itself. There will be a live link to see the total solar eclipse in the Arctic from the RRS Sir David Attenborough ship.

Solar Orbiter mission, ages 12+
Monday 10th August 19:00 - 19:30

In this talk, Martin Caldwell (STFC) will discuss the Solar Orbiter mission, which flies close to the Sun, learning about our closest star.

Martin will also talk about Solar Orbiter, the most complex scientific laboratory ever sent to our Sun, which is taking images of the Sun from closer than any spacecraft before and being the first to look at its polar regions. Martin will focus specifically on one of the on-board optical instruments ‘SPICE’, which was developed and built at RAL Space.

Martin will cover the technology challenges for travelling so close to the Sun, and how we make sure that the sensitive instruments can survive and operate in intense heat for a decade or more.

Join us online to celebrate the solar eclipse with a talk by Prof Richard Harrison followed by a live link to the RRS Sir David Attenborough to experience totality in the Artic!

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our in-person Summer Stargazing event online. The event will start with an introduction to solar physics and eclipses by RAL Space’s Professor Richard Harrison, a world-leading expert in solar physics who has played a key role in many solar missions.

The talk will be followed by a live link to the British Antarctic Survey onboard the Royal Research Ship (RRS) Sir David Attenborough, where you will a chance to experience totality with the crew.
