Looking for fun things to do with your kids over the summer holiday?

The Rochester Bridge Trust are hosting the free adventure golf course at St John’s Chatham daily from 10am to 4pm until 8 August.

Putt your way through six holes and six iconic bridges, including Rochester Bridge and the Dartford Crossing, and give your children the opportunity to learn more about engineering.

The Adventure Golf is free with no booking required, and will be open every day from 10am-4pm.

Upcoming Public Webinars from RAL Space

RAL Space are running a series of public webinars around the solar eclipse. These will be a family-friendly talk, some slightly more technical talks about solar missions, and then a live stream for the solar eclipse itself. There will be a live link to see the total solar eclipse in the Arctic from the RRS Sir David Attenborough ship.

Solar Orbiter mission, ages 12+
Monday 10th August 19:00 - 19:30

In this talk, Martin Caldwell (STFC) will discuss the Solar Orbiter mission, which flies close to the Sun, learning about our closest star.

Martin will also talk about Solar Orbiter, the most complex scientific laboratory ever sent to our Sun, which is taking images of the Sun from closer than any spacecraft before and being the first to look at its polar regions. Martin will focus specifically on one of the on-board optical instruments ‘SPICE’, which was developed and built at RAL Space.

Martin will cover the technology challenges for travelling so close to the Sun, and how we make sure that the sensitive instruments can survive and operate in intense heat for a decade or more.

Join us online to celebrate the solar eclipse with a talk by Prof Richard Harrison followed by a live link to the RRS Sir David Attenborough to experience totality in the Artic!

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our in-person Summer Stargazing event online. The event will start with an introduction to solar physics and eclipses by RAL Space’s Professor Richard Harrison, a world-leading expert in solar physics who has played a key role in many solar missions.

The talk will be followed by a live link to the British Antarctic Survey onboard the Royal Research Ship (RRS) Sir David Attenborough, where you will a chance to experience totality with the crew.

Viewing the Sun Safely, ages 5+

Join us to find out how to view a solar eclipse safely.

In this family-focussed talk (suitable for ages 5+), Simon Blackshaw from RAL Space will be sharing a little more detail about this year's eclipse, including what an eclipse is and some safe ways to view one. There will also be a practical demonstration of how to make your own pinhole solar viewer at home.

Solar Science and Space Weather, ages 12+
Thursday 6th August 19:00 - 19:30

Our Sun is far more than a distant light in the sky, its activity can have a direct impact on satellites, communications, navigation systems and power infrastructure here on Earth. In this talk, Dr David Barnes will explore the solar science carried out at RAL Space and its importance for understanding and forecasting space weather.

The talk will highlight STFC’s involvement in a series of pioneering solar missions over the past few decades, including SOHO, STEREO and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), as well as newer missions such as PUNCH. Through stunning images and movies from these spacecraft, we’ll take a journey from the Sun’s turbulent atmosphere to the space environment surrounding Earth, discovering how solar observations help us better understand our dynamic star and the effects it can have on our technological society.

Join schools across the world this World Ocean Day to discover the fascinating lives of these gentle ocean giants. Students will learn about manta rays' biology, habitats and behaviour, while hearing inspiring stories about the people working to protect them.

Perfect for primary schools, this session will introduce young learners to ocean conservation and show how people everywhere can work together to protect marine life and our shared ocean.

This live talk, aimed at primary children, will be informative and engaging. There will be the opportunity to ask questions afterwards.

What an incredible day at STEM in the Park 2026!

Around 4,200 visitors joined us in Memorial Gardens, Crawley on 16 May, to explore more than 100 hands-on STEM activities delivered by nearly 50 amazing exhibitors 👏

From launching over 500 rockets 🚀 and flying drones, to renewable energy challenges, VR experiences, robotics, engineering activities and exploring future STEM careers — the event once again showcased the power of hands-on learning and community collaboration.

The feedback speaks for itself:
📊 95% of visitors were from Crawley
📊 90% of young people said they learned something new and felt curious, excited and inspired by STEM
📊 98% said they would attend again

BCS Levelling Up: Computing (opportunity for female students in Kent and Medway)

Canterbury Christ Church University is pleased to announce that it will be offering female students in Kent and Medway the opportunity to participate in the Levelling Up Computing programme.

Levelling up is an initiative supported by BCS - The Chartered Institute for IT and Dr Tony Hill.

This 2-day event is aimed at female students who are in the first year of a 2 year programme of study at level 3 (e.g. A level, BTEC, T levels or other qualifications) who are considering a career in any area of Computing or IT.

The programme consists of 9 sessions including:

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Human Computer Interaction
Study Skills
Creative Coding
Data Science and Environmental Modelling
Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics
Writing a Personal Statement
Self Development using VR
Campus Tour and Lunch

Eight sessions will be delivered on campus and one will be delivered remotely.

The programme is free to attend, and lunch will be provided on both days.

Attendees will be responsible for the cost of transport to and from CCCU campus in Canterbury.

The dates are Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th June 2026 with the Welcome session taking place on Friday 12th June.

Applications are welcome from all qualifying students and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
