Education UK: Stories that Inspire 08/11/2018

Within the framework of our” Education UK: Stories that Inspire” online project, we are happy to introduce our interview with Ani Afrikyan, a Warnborough College student.

-Where did you study?
- I became a student in Warnborough college in Canterbury, Kent in 2011 for the academic year of 2012-13. My study course was for one year, and I stayed in the UK for one year and three months. Warnborough College celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013, as it was founded in Oxford in 1973. Warnborough moved to the famous cathedral and University City of Canterbury in 2001. Like Oxford, Canterbury is steeped in history, being the first place in England where education was formalised. Its sister university and college are based in Ireland. After graduating from YSU, my decision to study abroad was final, and as my family was supporting me, I started to apply to different universities. In the end I was accepted to a few universities and colleges in the Czech Republic, Israel, Austria and also UK. It was easy to choose, as I had been dreaming to study in the UK since childhood. So here I left for UK .

-Why is the UK education attractive for you?
- When trying to explore the UK educational system, the most important thing for me was that it gives you more experience and practice rather than lectures or study materials. Almost every topic covered by the lecturer or professor was shown and used in practice. It’s true to say that better to see and do once, than hear and read ten times. So I was sure that once I am there I am going to gain really huge experience and skills.

- What would you advise others who want to study in the UK?
- To any student who wants to study in the UK, I would like to advise and state the following:
- Be ready to work really hard. 24 hours are not going to be enough for sure, but once you graduate the pleasure you get is worth it.
- You are not going only to study, be ready to be doing everything at once. May sound simple but starting from housekeeping to studying, working and acting, everything you must do yourself as it is not Armenia. Life is really expensive there, so you should rely on yourself only. You are going to build your own world there.
- Do not be lazy and try to be involved in different projects and events. Always think twice or even more.
- I would also like to mention that I have been appointed to the official representative of my college in Armenia, so anyone interested in my college can enjoy special conditions, if recommended by me.

- How can they find the scholarship to cover the tuition fee and how did you manage to do that?
- To be honest I cannot advise anything about scholarships, as I did not manage to find one for myself either. I covered my tuition fee and all my expenses myself. And from that point I should say that getting a part time job in the UK helped me lot. I got that job by studying and getting training in that company, which is one of leading ones in UK. I also earned certificates and qualifications from them, which are valid in Europe as well. It is hard to find a nice and comfortable, well paid job there, but low paid jobs which can even not require fluent English can be found.

- What are your plans for the future?
-Even if we keep saying that it is better there, staying in the UK alone for me was not the right solution. I decided to come back and try to start my career here. Now I managed to get the job for which I studied so hard. At the moment I am the Sales & Marketing Manager at Golden Palace 5 star Hotel Yerevan. For the future, I am planning to get in short training courses again in the UK, but let’s wait and see what will happen.

I would be happy to help any student planning to study in UK, especially if they are considering moving to London. As I was living in London, I can advise on almost everything (flat renting, shops, which areas to live, transport, etc. )
