Reflective School Support is a specialist home tuition service.

We provide lessons during the day to students unable to attend school due to illness, exclusion or SEND or after school to help disadvantaged children catch up, or keep up, with their peers.

Could learning take place in outer space?

Maybe not. But the work our learners produced last week has come pretty close!

As part of our first Space Week, we set a series of tasks to challenge the minds of our learners, with the intention of sparking some curiosity about what lies beyond Earth.

One of our learners took this a step further, creating this amazing space-themed maths game. Pointing young people in the right direction is part of what we do, but seeing them take their own ideas and express themselves independently like this is what makes activities like these so special.

A brilliant piece of work and something to be proud of!

What if alternative provision came before suspension, not after it?

Recent Department for Education figures show that persistent disruptive behaviour accounted for 52% of reasons recorded for suspensions during the spring term of 2024/25.

But preventative measures can be implemented to engage with disruptive behaviour that begins to emerge before suspension or exclusion is even relevant. There may be an opportunity to ask how support can differ.

Alternative provision can be part of an earlier response. Individualised tuition can give young people another way to engage with education that's more appropriate for their needs.

It's important we do what we can to keep our young people connected to their education.

Dyslexia Awareness Day reminds us that accessibility within education should be constant, not seasonal.

We recognise the importance of individualised approaches to education, having worked with a variety of students who all have different wants and needs. Reading, writing and processing information, for example, may look different from one learner to another and it's important we make the necessary adjustments to support them.

There are plenty of routes into education. Sometimes, it's simply about finding the right one.

Reflective prepares for takeoff!

Every year in October, World Space Week rolls around and this year we’ve put together three separate missions for our learners to take part in.

There are challenges for everyone, inspiring creativity, communication and problem solving skills which we hope will spark a little curiosity about outer space. We’re excited to see the imaginative ideas our learners come up with.

It’s almost time for lift off!

We don’t automatically expect engagement from the young people that we work with.

We understand that an environment of trust and support must first be established in order for young people to feel able to engage.

Sometimes, that also means considering where education takes place. Reflective School Support offers students a variety of options to fit their personal needs. This is often support provided at home, within existing mainstream schools, or somewhere safe in the community to help every individual thrive.

And just like anything we build, that environment must be maintained and adjusted along the way in line with what works and what doesn’t.

When we create the right conditions for students, we see results that satisfy us all.

Ofsted and CQC recently found “wide variation” in the way EOTAS packages are used, their quality and the quality of oversight.

This variation feels alarming when we know every young person who receives education outside of school deserves the same quality provision that appropriately addresses their needs whilst genuinely helping them move forwards.

But within the same report were examples of the positive impact of AP.

One is described as ‘Nina’s Story.’ A package including 15 hours a week at an alternative provision setting studying English and Maths formed part of a wider support network that saw her grow in confidence and develop relationships with those around her.

The government's consideration of national quality standards isn’t unfounded, but the individual work of providers who are already delivering quality provision shouldn’t be ignored.

What needs to change is consistency.

What good alternative provision looks like already exists, but every child deserves to access it.

For many families, alternative provision can be completely new territory.

Suddenly, it can feel like there’s a new language to acquaint themselves with, and likely a lot of questions about what education will look like for their children. Understanding when alternative provision can be helpful can be a challenge when there’s no single answer.

We’ve mapped out some of the most common reasons for referral, but we know each experience differs.

We want to help make new territory feel more familiar for both parents and learners. That starts with making sure everyone understands how alternative provision can help target individual needs.

A referral might tell us why we are getting to know each other, but we know that’s just the beginning.

Don’t forget to ask the important questions this open evening season.

Families across Staffordshire choosing a secondary school already have a lot to consider whether that be subjects, extracurriculars, location and more.But while you’re finding out what schools offer on their best days, it’s worth considering how they cater for the more difficult ones.

Education can be a struggle for some, a feeling that can be heightened during transitions like primary to secondary. Ensuring schools have the appropriate infrastructure and support teams for your child is just as important as anything else.

At Reflective, we work alongside mainstream schools to support young people who are finding attendance and education challenging. The right school will allow your child to thrive, but should also help make appropriate arrangements if their circumstances change.

Every parent will have experienced an influx of Back to School content at every turn recently.

But we know that this excitement is unfortunately not shared by every student.

Watching your child experience difficulties with the transition back to school can be disheartening, and seeing so much excitement online can make this feel even harder.

For the parents and carers navigating a different kind of September, what has helped make this September a little easier for your family?

When we looked back through some of the words used to describe Reflective, we noticed some of the same words coming up again and again.

There were some we expected. But amongst the support and reassurance we provide, there was also joy and happiness.

There’s something really special about young people who have experienced barriers to their education actively looking forward to Monday and all that comes with it. For lots of the children we work with, feeling that way about education may not have always come easily.

Reading feedback like this from families means a lot to us. Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to share their experience with us. We’re very proud that joy is a part of it.
