Preparing For September and Ensuring a Positive Transition Back to Learning 🗓️

As the summer holidays come to an end, learners may experience a mixture of emotions. For some, this transition can feel exciting, however the unfamiliarity and changes to routine may be more challenging for some.

Consistency and preparation are key to making change feel more manageable.

We recognise the additional barriers that accompany the long break, and that returning learners may need extra time and support whilst reconnecting with familiar faces and learning environments.

For potential learners joining a new setting with Reflective School Support, we understand that every transition is different and come prepared to accommodate, build positive relationships and provide personalised support to try and ease any difficulties faced by our students.

By taking this time to understand every learner, we can help create a positive foundation for the school year ahead.

Often, some of the first things we learn about a child as an AP provider are the things they struggle with.

But getting to know a young person is more than just what we find on a form.

Taking the time to get to know each child is a huge part of what our tutors do. We know that learners are so much more than the circumstances that brought them to us, and that through conversation and consistency, we can build relationships allowing children to be themselves.

With September approaching, we’re looking forward to getting to know the new faces we’ll be working with even better.

Is there something you wish a teacher had known about you?

There’s a lot that doesn’t show up on a register.

Nobody doubts the importance of attendance for young people and the access it gives them to learning, routine and important relationships.

But a register only tells half the story.

When we focus too much on the number - 95%, 80%, 50% - we forget that context matters too.

Behind the percentage, a child could be anxious about walking through the school gates. Relationships may have broken down, needs may have gone unmet. For children wanting to attend, it can feel impossible.

Alternative provision can create the opportunity to understand what sits behind an absence.

Getting young people back into education starts with understanding why they aren’t in the first place, and doing something about it.

The first few weeks don’t have to look like the rest of the year.

Sometimes we can expect that the change of environment and approach that alternative provision offers will show immediate results. It can be tempting to look straight ahead to where they could eventually be.

Getting there can take time though.

Those first few weeks in September involve not only our tutors getting to know the young person in front of them, but we know that our learners are getting to know us too. Forming a strong relationship can set the foundation for a good year at Reflective. That’s what September is for.

Send this to someone who might need the reminder this September.

‘In a system that does not guarantee an easy path in education, we have been lucky enough to see the chance and opportunities [child] has now.’

This feedback was recently shared by one of our parents and carers about their experience of Reflective School Support.

With A-level results day being celebrated across the country last week, we’re sure many students’ hard work has paid off. We know that grades matter, and the pathways that they open up for young people are worth celebrating.

But the idea of an ‘easy path’ in education is an interesting one.

The UK’s education system relies heavily on numbers and outcomes to assess how well a child is performing. But can we really offer equal opportunity to excel without making room for differences in learning?

This opportunity matters to us. The flexibility of alternative provision isn’t to replace ambition, but to give learners a different route towards it.

Who Said Progress Had to Play by the Rules? 🎲

We’re often looking forward to the next milestone. A clear definition of progress to measure our success. But what if children need to pause and take a different route?

For young people with additional needs, progress can be difficult to measure from the outside. It doesn’t necessarily follow the path we are told it should. This summer, when school routines change and usual markers of progress disappear, there is even more value in recognising the achievements that don’t fit these traditional measures.

Trying new things. Taking a break. Adapting to change. Asking for help. These are all different routes which are equally valuable to every child’s development.

There’s more than one way to move forward.

Different Contexts. Common Aspirations. This year’s International Youth Day theme really stood out to us.

When you work with young people, you quickly realise just how different every individual journey is. What doesn’t change is the importance of having something to work towards. A young person’s circumstances may shape their journey, but it should never limit what they can aspire to.

This feels particularly important to remind ourselves in alternative provision. Just because there might be more than one way forward doesn’t mean a different route should ever mean a lesser one.

This International Youth Day, we’re celebrating young people wherever they are on their journey.
