Looking directly at the Sun, even during a partial eclipse, can cause permanent damage to your eyesight. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.

Carrington Mortlock didn’t chase a qualification.

𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲’𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦.

It wasn’t.

Initially, it seemed like a routine check.

In reality, it was a question of whether the paperwork still reflected operational reality.

Because the real question wasn’t whether the paperwork existed.

It was whether the evidence justified the decision to proceed.

Many people immediately focused on whether the RAMS had been completed.

Others focused on whether work should stop.

Both are reasonable questions.

But the first question an experienced safety professional should ask is:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆?

Because paperwork is evidence.

But only if it still reflects operational reality.

Controls only reduce risk when they’re applied in practice.

A method statement doesn’t automatically make real work safe.

Safe work depends on whether the planned controls remain appropriate for the work actually being carried out.

The role of a safety professional isn’t simply to verify that documentation exists.

It’s to determine whether operational reality has moved beyond the assumptions in the documentation.

Ask:

🔹 Has the work changed?
🔹 Have the conditions changed?
🔹 Have the people changed?
🔹 Have the equipment or materials changed?
🔹 Has operational pressure changed?

If the answer to any of those questions is yes, the paperwork may no longer represent the risk.

The correct decision is the one justified by the best available evidence.

When the situation is clear, the procedure is readily available and there is time to think, the distinction can be difficult to see.

Safer organisations are built by people who can interpret risk, exercise judgement and make sound decisions when the answer is no longer obvious.

The role of great training isn’t simply to transfer knowledge.

It’s to help people develop the judgement, confidence, and decision-making capability they’ll need when operational reality no longer matches the procedure.
