Join the SJCHS in welcoming Dr. Sofia Gotti who is hosting a talk on the topic โJosefina Plรก: Between the Indigenous and the Modern in Paraguayan Art and Literatureโ this March!
In her own words: โThis talk will discuss the work of Josefina Plรก (1903-1999), a naturalised Paraguayan artist, poet, novelist and an avid scholar of Guaranรญ culture. Plรก was a champion of indigenous women whose herstories were at the centre of her cultural production. Straddling Feminist and Decolonial projects ante litteram, Plรกโs work sheds light on the complex relationship between indigeneity, modernity and womenโs emancipation in Paraguay.โ
Join us on Monday 7th March for an enlightening talk and discussion held in the Main Lecture Theatre, Old Divinity School from 18:15!
We hope to see you there!

Join the SJCHS in welcoming Dr. Adam Chau who is hosting a talk on the topic โMaoโs Mango Feverโ this February!
In his own words: โDo you know that a basket of mangoes can change the course of history? Thatโs exactly what happened on the fifth of August 1968, when Chairman Mao gave a basket of mangoes to the Workersโ Mao Zedong Thought Propaganda Team sent to university campuses to quell the escalating armed Red-Guard factionalism (the mangoes had been given to him by the Pakistani foreign minister). A mango fever ensued that enveloped the whole country, and the mangoes played a crucial role in delegitimating the red guards (the mangoes were not for them!). Tens of thousands mango replicas travelled up and down the country in reliquary-like containers held in parades by reverential revolutionary-committee members. This is a crucial chapter at the height of the Cultural Revolution that has heretofore been neglected even by experts on that period of Chinaโs political history. Dr Chau has written about Mao's Mangoes in several publications.โ
Join us on Monday 21st February for an intriguing talk and Q&A session in the Main Lecture Theatre in the Old Divinity School from 16:45.
We hope to see you there!

Join the SJCHS in welcoming Dr. Ruth Watson who is hosting a talk on her latest research project โCrowds in World Historyโ this January!
In her own words: โThis talk is about writing a history of โthe crowdโ as a social and historical category. Conceiving crowds as more than simply aggregations of people, my interest is in examining how people become conscious of being part of a crowd, and how in turn such crowds develop their own social momentum. I argue that ideas about the crowd, and instances of crowd action (such as riots), are an important theme throughout world history. The project is inspired by George Rudรฉโs classic social history text, The Crowd in History, and focuses mostly on โprotest crowdsโ. His framework, however, is Eurocentric: it concentrates on the transition to industrial society in England and France from the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. I seek to develop a broader conceptualisation by drawing on a wider range of examples, acknowledging and asserting the existence of crowds in diverse cultural and historical settings. To this end, my talk will discuss case studies such the crowd that assembled in Mexico City in 1692 and proceeded to burn down every sign and symbol related to Spain; the Morant Bay Rebellion, launched in 1865 by a crowd of Jamaican freedmen who descended in protest on a courthouse; the 1906 โhooligan riotsโ in colonial Cape Town; and finally, the crowds in Eastern Nigeria who instigated the so-called โWomenโs Warโ in 1929.โ
Join us on January 31st for a talk and Q&A session in the Lightfoot Room by 17:45.
We hope to see you there!

The formation of the Gay Black Group was a landmark in gay black history. Meeting at Gay's the Word, a bookshop in Bloomsbury, London, it
provided a sounding board and support for gay and black communities of the 1980s. Sitting on the outside of both by virtue of their sexuality or
ethicity the group attempted to negotiate a path through the complexities of cultural and sexual identity. In this film, members of the group talk to Paula Ahluwalia about their experiences.
One of the interviewees is the film-maker Isaac Julien, then a student at St Martin's School of Art. In 1991 his film Young Soul Rebels won the
critics prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
